Mpgs went from bad to worse

What's helped me with mileage has been monitoring it on the go with a Scangauge. Watching both current and average mileage has helped. If I give it a good push, I'll see the mileage drop to like 2.5 mpg. Engine brake when you can, coast when you can, etc. I have a 2.5" lift with 265/75-R16 tires and 200 lbs of gear I always carry with me. My mileage in highway gets up to 19 or 20 mpg if I watch it, or 14 mpg if I don't.

Aside from that, you're not liking the mileage regardless and doing what I do may not be your liking. The 3rd Gen's get a little better mileage, but with some drawbacks (as with most options out there).

Same here, went from a 2nd Gen to a 3rd Gen and back. Never got a Raptor though, haha, although that sounds like fun.

 

My last 2 fill ups I got 11.2, 11.7 mpg. Now on my 3rd fill up after oil change & cleaned tbody & maf.

This is what I've been using. I'll need to look to see if it has that stuff in it. I can say I haven't found anything that works better.

True. I think the EPA estimates for the 2013 Access Cab V6/manual were 16/19 and the Auto was 1 or 2 mpg better.

Thats another good one I forgot to mention. It does have PEA in it as well. All of Liquid Moly's products are very good and highly regarded on BITOG. If you get bored and want to go down a rabbit hole concerning any fluid, grease or additive on a vehicle or heavy equipment. Use whatever search machine you prefer and include "bitog" into your search wording. Those guys are the biggest nerds on automotive fluids based on independent lab readings and behind the scenes info. Truly amazing info and most of the time over my head! But it helps you make the best decision for your purposes based on facts rather than flashy advertising that is very misleading as we all know.

As for my MPG's.... I average 14.7mpg over the 30,500ish (54k total) I have owned my truck. 2015 DCLB 4wd, 2.5" lift for the last 5k-ish, 265/70r17 Duratracs for the last 30k, NGK Iridium plugs at 35k, 5k OCI's with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum or Mobil 1 Extended Performance (5w-30) and HPTuners added about 1 year ago (best mod for the truck, period). Pretty much 50/50 driving with a slightly heavy foot and periods of long idle during winter. I normally don't drive it everyday and usually use it for truck stuff when I do. At 70mph I think I usually get 18mpg and at 80-85mph (SD speed limit 80mph) I get around 14-15mpg.....haha

I also didn't get the truck for the steller MPG's, but I don't think anyone here did. I was hoping for a little better than what I get...but I'm not too concerned. It's reliable, will continue to be as I maintain it, easy to work on, plenty capable off road for me and looks great IMO.

 

Exactly. Speed (aka air drag) really kills it on these trucks.

Personally I find I get the best MPG on big secondary roads, maybe 55-60 mph range. Still not great because of all my RTT, armor, tires etc but better than the interstate

Stock, I consistently got 20-20.5 mpg on a 25 mile commute light-to-light on Phoenix surface streets at 0-50 mph.

Same commute, but now lifted 1.5”, stock tires and about 200# add on items, and I get 19-19.5 mpg.

Freeway/highway at 70-85 mph, I get about 17.5 mpg from a full tank.

 

4WD or 2WD truck?

I live in the pnw so I’m not sure if we have winter gas or not. It does stay around 40 most of the winter and rarely gets colder

 

Winter fuel is only part of the equation. The truck also changes the air/fuel in colder weather in general so even with good tire pressures, you can still get lower MPG when colder. I was getting 17-18 highway on my commutes over the winter. But now I'm back into the 20 range pretty consistently with the warmer weather.

Me too. And that feels like the sweet spot for these trucks. They're just more relaxed at that speed vs. trying to maintain 70-75 on the highway.

 

I did an oil and filter change, added seafoam to the gas tank and got 12.82L per 100 km in city driving which works out to about 18 mpg

 

Pretty well established that aside from the few reports of 300+ miles per tank, most of us from all Gens. get about 250.

Are some thirstier? Evidently. What causes it? No one knows. I'll just add that every truck I've ever had, had something I hated about it. This one is gas mileage.

my 5 lug got 27 hwy. I know how to drive easy when i want.

 

I find my unloaded, stock suspension truck feels awful light at speeds above 75 and I have to adjust my driving habits at those speeds. I try hard to stay under 75 mph, stay in the right lane, let those who want to go faster use the left lane.

 

Third fill up with premium and a can of Jectron added this time, I got 13.7 mpg. Same lead foot habitats.

 

Heck ya! Something seems to be working. If the only changes are an oil change, MAF/TB cleaning and the fuel additive, I would venture to say the fuel additive is the largest variable. As an oil change rarely effects MPG unless it was way over due. As well as the MAF and TB cleaning generally has more of an effect on idle and drivability, unless the MAF was totally caked in junk. Either way, 2mpg is quite an improvement!
