I’m getting 15 MPG average? Truck 2 days old

Pushing a 4500lb (?) chunk of metal down the highway at 75 m.p.h. I know I'd drink more than a gallon of water every 16 miles...

 

Mine was low for the first tank or two, then jumped up, probably due to computer learning an break-in. I reset my average mileage about once or twice a year to see how things change, but my numbers are pretty consistent. On average over about 10k miles I get just under 20 with stock sized tires. I have a 2 inch lift, bumper and winch, along with a topper. If I am going 65 or so it is pretty easy to pull 20+. If I am going 80 I get about 16. I have 11 miles of stop and go to work every day (Denver area) and typically average about 18-19 on a tank in town. Some drives I do a lot so I know when things are weird (winter gas etc). If I head to the Keystone ski resort and back (about 160 miles round trip) my trip average is almost always right at 22. Sucks going up the mountains out of Denver, but is great coming home. I hang around the speed limit and don't drive like those yahoos that feel they need to drive 80+ up I70 in the winter. I frequently do a 1400 mile round trip from Denver to Flagstaff via I70 then down through Moab. Heading down my mileage usually averages about 19.6. Coming home it is usually about 20.5 for the trip. I blame most of the difference on prevailing winds. Grand Junction to the Moab turn off always seems like a headwind going then a tailwind on the return. That section of 80 mph speed limit also really eats my average MPG for that tank. I just had KDMAX 6.0 flashed this week and right now it seems to have bumped up my mileage a bit as it holds gears way better than stock. I head to Flag in two weeks so I will no then on long trip mileage

 

15MPG sounds fine to me.

Sounds like you need a 5 lug Tacoma, Toyota stopped making those, so much for nostalgia. If MPG are a concern.

 

These trucks DO NOT like speeds above 70mph. Above that, they get super thirsty. Set your cruise to 65 and you'll see a dramatic increase in fuel efficiency.

Also, using the standard cruise option (adaptive cruise) will net you the poorest mpg numbers. I've found using the non-adaptive cruise, S mode in 6, speed set at 65mph and increasing your factory tires to about 37psi will get you MUCH better fuel mileage. In a factory truck, that should get you in the mid 20s on the highway.

This made me realize though exactly how poor MPG the Tacoma owners I’ve seen get. I always saw Tacoma, often lifted fly past me (when I’m going 80+ mph) seeing them drive like that, I thought I’d be fine driving 80s but clearly it’s horrible MPG.

Its amazing the mpg drop between 65mph and 75mph on the highway. Now I drive like a grampa!

 

the truck needs 500 to 1000 miles to break in and have the fuel trims settle. The stock tune on these trucks is unbelievably bad.

You may be interested in OVtune. My truck averages 17-21mpg with 32’s 4.88’s and armor. At 80mph I get 16mpg

 

I've found the MPG of these trucks (at least mine) really depend on how you drive. I routinely get 20+ mpg around town, even hitting most of the lights red. I can also just as easily get terrible mileage.

Hell, the other day, driving back from the archery range, all suburban/city driving, I got 23 mpg. Then I'll have other shorter trips where I randomly get like 13-15mpg. lol

Usually though, I average on a tank 17-18mpg, almost entirely city/non-freeway miles.

 

I average between 16 and 18 around town this was when I filled up and actually just cruised at a perfect speed for a couple miles obviously this isn't normal but it was nice to see

 

My drive home After purchase was similar. Colorado and Utah on I-70 doing 75-80. Mpg was 14 or 15. Then, after a little break in and not going 75, I consistently got over 20mpg. I currently get 19mpg on winter gas. I'm expecting 21 or 22 in the summer.

Also, if you have a headwind, expect poorer mileage.

 

What is going on with you interior? Looks like an old Cadillac possessed your truck.

Once your truck breaks in you should be getting 20-22mpg on the highway, I get that easily and I have lightweight off road tires.

Don't expect more than 16-7 city unless there is few red lights and little traffic.

My first tank was horrendous too. Now I'm only halfway through my 2nd tank, but I'm already up to 18 mpg average on this tank with roughly 60% highway driving. Though I find I do better with the highway mileage when driving above 70, because if I'm going any slower it downshifts every time I hit a hill and maintain my speed.

I see I'm not the only one who threw-up in my mouth.
