Can I use 80w90 in my diffs/tcase?

All i can say is how slick my transfer case works with the stuff that came from the factory....i really don't wish to try anything else.

For all the fellas using whatnot brand X in their T-cases:

What I can’t figure out, is that if the barnyard version 75W90 gear oil is fine in the T-case, why they heck does Toyota ship these cans of fluid all the way from Japan? It literally has a picture of a transfer case on it, and is called Transfer Gear oil, and is packaged in a non-volatile tin can (has no plastic to react with its contents). I live in Canada, and sure enough, the dealer stocks this fluid imported from Japan.

The transfer case has a large, multilink, chain in it, and one bronze synchronizer. In essence, it is different than a basic gear set, like your rear diff, or front diff. I am not sure why it would be worth it, for the cost of a single bottle/can of oil, changed hardly ever, not to use the Toyota LF fluid unless you simply cannot find it or afford it.

I dunno. My T-case certainly has given me no grief since I went back to it from using synthetic 75W90.

 

The t case wants 1.1 liters so that means you have to buy 2 just so use a little bit of the second can.

 

I put in one can and it filled it absolutely perfectly. Came running back out the fill plug on level ground.

 

oh wow. Ok then I might get one. The cans here in Lebanon are 60 dollars a liter. What did you use to get the oil in the t case? A pump ?

 

I paid about that in CDN dollars, so that is fair. I just used one of these. Doesn’t screw onto the can obviously, but works well enough.

The Ravenol lists the Toyota P/N for the Toyota LF 75W fluid and is significantly cheaper. I haven't done mine yet, but that is what I will be using.

 

Funny thing though when looking at the entire toyota transfer case fluid part#, the ravenol compatibility listing for their toyota''s part #'s don't quite match up....last digit in their part# is a 0 while toyota's is a 1. Don't know if just a misprint or they did it on purpose because its not quite the same stuff.

 

I think there's a European number and N. American number.
Ravenol matches the European number.

 

Do you get these free or at a discount? That will great in the t-case... it's not cheap, either. Probably work well in the axles, too.

 

They actually list both numbers on the Ravenol bottle, and found this on the interwebs:

"Replacement and equivalent to Toyota center transfer case fluid part numbers

$96 08885-81080 Toyota Genuine Transfer Case Gear Oil LF 75W 1 Litre 08885-81080

08885-81080 US spec and 08885-81081 Euro spec."

Pretty sure both those Toyota part numbers are the same stuff.

75w LF is $88.38 from my dealer. It is what it is I guess.

 

Toyota LF has quite the additive package. I would not use anything but that.
