I have a love/hate relationship with math. It all comes down to how its taught. I've had some really great teachers and some really shitty ones.
I actually flunked algebra my sophomore year of high school. It took a lot of pleading from both me and my parents to get my school to agree to let me drop the class for the 2nd half of the year. I felt I was too far behind and too confused to just transfer to another class, I wanted to start from the beginning. My school required 3 years of math to graduate so flunking out my sophomore year meant that I would have to take/pass math classes in both my junior and senior year or I wouldn't graduate. I wasn't hte only one struggling with his class - I think he had a 90% failure rate - and a lot of kids left or transferred out like I did.
So junior year starts up and guess what? I was assigned to the same asshole for algebra again. I couldn't believe it. My counselor was overwhelmed and wouldn't see me so I went straight to the principal - told him what bull shit it was and that there was no way I was staying in his class. He told me to come in early the next day and we'd sort it out and asked that I go to class that day so that I wouldn't get in trouble for skipping. So I did. Class time came, teacher sees me and sneers at me. He was passing out text books and I refused to take one - told him no thanks, I'm not staying. Everyone in class that overheard me suddenly had the  look on their faces.
I ended up getting a different teacher, got straight A's both my junior and senior year. I made it a point to bring my report cards to him at the end of the year just to rub it in his face that I wasn't the problem.

I ended up being an honor roll student, national honors society and all. And I was close to being a salutatorian for my graduation. I blame that class on not making the cut. I won in the end though - the school district forced him into early retirement a year or two after I graduated due to shitty job performance. I think my situation opened the flood gates and they started taking a closer look at him. Class sizes at the start of the year were about 30, end of the year he was lucky to still have 5 or 6 kids enrolled. Lots of straight A students flunking.

I've literally seen the L100 guys do this scene:

Guy in plane (back ramp) to guy on ground, "I think we're nose heavy?"

Guy on ground bends over looking down side of plane with his thumb up looking at front landing gear strut. Replies, "Naw, we're good."

... qualifier, this is Alaska, most these guys have years of experience...highly qualified and experienced "Bush Pilots on steroids" for lack of a better phrase. :)

Actually our school district teaches it to all the students starting in 3rd grade for one or two years. I don't know why they still do, but they did. It's just not practical today where everybody uses a keyboard to type. Anyway, recently my mother sent him a card for Christmas and wrote a note in cursive. He looked at it handed the card to me and said, "Read this to me. I can't remember how to read this anymore." So much for that grand experiment.

I don't post much here but I feel invigorated knowing I'm not the only one with math problems. The thing is. I use some calculations every day at work and can do them in my head.
