Hey, I'm just wondering if anyone knows the specs on the factory speakers (non jbl) looking to upgrade.

Do you think if I upgraded just the speakers without an amp it would give a lot more sound output?

    No it will not.

You need a Kicker Key Amp and new speakers. Go search in the Audio forum for Kicker Key and start reading.

I went with Kicker Key, Kicker component speakers in the front and Kicker coax speakers in the rear and added an 8" power sub.

Specifically, for the front, I went with KSS6704, the rears got KSC6704. There is a HUGE difference between the sound out of the KSC6704 and KSS6704. The difference is even with a balanced (or darn near it) output from the Amp.

Go with components and do not even look back.

6x9 front door speakers, 2 inch dash speakers, .6.5 rear speakers

For rear you can get standard coaxial speakers
for the front you have a few options, you can get coaxial speakers and subaru kicker tweeters. Or you can get component speakers, but you will need to do a little more wiring to get the crossovers in.

To use the speaker to their full potential you should get a amp, but it is in no way needed. The speakers will sound better than stock just on the oem headunit.

Focal components front and rear. 5 channel JL audio amp, LC6i audio control, Kicker 10" comp Q in a ported ordinance box. Rear component install in the back doors looks factory. Sounds 10x better than wife TRD with the JBL system. 20200108_142301.jpg

You need to amplify a quality speaker to get the sound its capable of. If you dont, you're not getting the most of your speaker.

    It's a secret
If your vehicles amp/speaker system doesn't rattle the license plate and screws off OTHER people's vehicles when you're stopped at a light...you're doing it wrong.

    This

when i got my taco, the first major upgrade I did was all the door speakers. which was a great improvement in sound QUALITY...but I was still having to turn my speakers up to at least half to even hear them, and near max to listen to em while cruising down the freeway.

I've since added a 5 channel amp, AudioControl LC6i, and a kenwood excelon 10" sub. Now, the volume stays between 5-15 rather than maxing it out, and the QUALITY and loudness are both significantly improved. Still on the factory headunit too, no complaints at all.

If you don't need it much louder though, just speakers will do wonders for sound quality.

lol was a bit spoiled, 2 cars ago I had a '08 VW Rabbit with a JL Audio 10" sub and 1000W amp. then i went from that, to a stock 2017 WRX, no audio upgrades. figured it was time to get in touch with my roots
