That looks to be the spring out of that seal, there is no o-ring on that side of the spindle

I have the same issue with one of mine. Won't hold as the seal that keeps it in place is torn on mine.

Well I was told I needed to replace a seal (since I bought these used), but I didn't know if that was a separate issue and just wanted to double check. After looking at that picture it makes more sense now.
I think I have them but I need to double check what's on my shelf in my garage.

Having some difficulty getting the hub back on, it slides easily about 2 inches down the spline, clearly mated properly then dead stops Everything is very clean and splines have anti seize on them) - I can get the hub bolts torqued down but then the dust seals aren't mated and there's about a half-inch gap between them, what would pull the axle through all the way? Would it be a bad move to try pulling it by torquing the axle nut?

Did you ever get them in? One side difficult and other side not? I've had them catch like this before, persistence got them in. Give a twist when you seat it, it's a tight fit for sure. My suspicion was it was catching on the seal.

Got your info from the 4Runner forum. Do you do 2wd 5th Gen 4Runners...2011?

Mine are howling pretty loudly and I’d hate to spend $600 on Bluepits.

If you make sure the splines are aligned then you should be good to run the nut down. I used an impact gun and let the axle spin while running the nut down. The new splines of the new bearing are a little tighter than the old worn bearing, plus the new seals.
