Are there any examples of cars using independent Steering between the front wheels. I'm familiar with the Ackerman effect and I'm not talking about that. I'm mean the 2 front wheels can independently turn to any angle at any time.

I'm working on an RC car and I just realized it would be very easy to make this work. I'm hoping someone can point me to some crazy 1980s F1 car where this was actually done.

Years ago, I worked at a Montgomery Ward auto center (anybody remember those??). A chevy station wagon came in with a broken tie rod. The old coot had taken off his belt (pants), strapped the loose tie rod to the sway bar so it wouldn't drag on the ground & DROVE it to the shop! The "loose" wheel followed the wheel that could still be steered - who knew!
I was the dumb kid who got to work on it & he was waiting for me by the car. "Gimme my belt back", he says. I unstrapped his belt & gave it to him - he puts it on his pants right there & walks away without another word.
    I'll never forget that.

As mentioned above , independent front steer would be suicide , however Here is the only rear steer Tacoma I know of .

Tracked vehicle? It's an RC car

    Suicide? It's an RC car.

With all the crazy things that have been done in racing throughout the 80s and 90s, I'm surprised that this wasn't one of them. I guess it's a dead end.

I believe he is speaking of a Radio controlled car .
What is strange is how he asks about a formula 1 racing car from the 80,s possibly having two independent front wheels ???
This led me to believe he was looking for information on a road vehicle using independent front wheels to which I replied it would be suicide .
To be honest , i cant see any advantage of independent front wheels on a radio controlled vehicle either .

Only 'cuz reading is hard

@soggyBottom I've done a thing called 'crab drive' on robots, which is generally what you're talking about except all 4 wheels:

    https://team1640.com/wiki/index.php/4-Wheel_Pivot_Drive

Controlling it with a standard RC car controller is going to be tough though, I don't think there are enough inputs.

Fully independent steering would be difficult to control in a full-size vehicle - skid-steer sticks don't give enough precision or tactile feedback, and two steering wheels wouldn't be manageable. What you would want is a powered actuator that "modifies" the normal steering input independently for each wheel by a few degrees. To actually gain performance on the track, you'd need tire data (lateral grip vs. slip angle vs. camber vs. vertical load, etc.). I don't think you have tire data for the RC car? Plus the power-to-weight ratio for RC cars is so much higher that it's easy enough to break traction and steer with the throttle.

I already have the hardware to do it. The software is trivial to write. The controls would appear no different.

My question was targeted less at could I do it and more and should I. Since there are apparently no examples of anyone doing it on some exotic race car, I doubt there is anything to gain from it.
