My buddy who recently bought a dump trailer wanted a 14' but wound up with a 16' cause he couldn't find a 14'

 

Wonder what year the Snapper is from? That's a neat piece!

 

I had the opposite problem; I wanted a shorter trailer (12') because most of where I'm maneuvering it is sort of tight (I'd rented a 16' a couple of times & borrowed a 14' and they were a pain to get lined up) but I still wanted a 14k capacity & a scissor hoist. Everybody around here just had 14's and 16's in stock.

 

The Snapper was built in 1973, has a 5 hp Briggs engine. It is a shredder not a chipper, it will clean up small stuff but not big branches.
The flail assembly is only about 10-12 inches below the top of the hopper - not safety designed like the modern ones.
Just a little bit spooky to use seeing the flail that exposed and whirling away.

 

When that was built people had more common sense on how to use things

 

Now we have phones that won't let you turn the screen brightness up all the way w/o making you acknowledge that the brightness might not be good for your eyes. I weep for our future generations.

 

Remember, the same people who need the warnings are going to be our health care providers --- !!

 

And they didn't sue because they did something stupid.

 

My Great Grandfather's '50 JD B is sitting down in the barn. My Great Grandfather was an equipment proprietor and farmer. There is a picture somewhere of him in his store with horse drawn equipment and gear along with JD signs and modern engine powered implements. Also pictures on the farm of various simultaneous horse drawn and tractor powered operations.



My Grandfather bought the farm in '58 and all the equipment came with it. A clip of his inventory when he took over.



I've always dreamed of getting it moving again. It has sat since around '69 when he passed.

I just don't know how I would use it. Lack of hydraulics and 3-point really limits it's capability as an all-around tractor.

What do yall use your old tractors for?

 

To be fair, I feel like pointing out that the foolish sue-happy adults of the 80's and 90's are why we have the current overemphasis on safety-related features for today's generation (who aren't any less foolish or sue-happy, but they're stuck with suing over increasingly trivial things)

So if you were an adult during that era, your generation really is directly responsible for today's nanny state

 

"What do yall use your old tractors for?"

I don't use my International 140 for much of anything -- but I often start it up just to listen to it run for a while, it has such a calm relaxing sound.
It would be a satisfying project getting your old girl back in running condition.
As far as use - drive it around just to listen to it run - sensible, no not really, but enjoyable just the same.

 

That is neat you have the paper with his writing of things on it. The A we have, we don't use it for anything anymore. I used to rake hay with it. I did crank it Sunday and ride my son around the yard. The 140's I use them to move things around the yard, don't have a garden this year so that's out for them.

 

I miss having an old one, but can't bring myself to spend the $ on an old tractor when my modern compact does the same stuff and more. But, an older gear-driven traction-minded tractor is handier than a modern HST for a task like mowing or grading, where you're driving long periods at a set speed or RPM. Also better at twitching logs, if you're heating with wood and are pulling it in from the back 40.

The last couple of years I've found myself browsing CL or marketplace for an old 8n or similar, because for grading the camp road, a heavy old farm tractor would be much better than my little TC18. But I haven't been able to convince myself to buy one just for that one purpose.

 

Grading the driveway and laneways would be prime use for the B.

It definitely would be satisfying. I need to talk my dad into helping. He worked the farm up until '81 and he keeps saying he has no interest in working on the B but I think that he would get a real kick out of putting around on it. I think that restoring for nostalgia purposes alone would be worth it.

We have about 15 acres of mowing. Fortunately we have a JD F935 with 72" deck for that.
