I’m getting 15 MPG average? Truck 2 days old

I can get over 20 mpg even around town with careful driving and good luck making lights and without a lot of very short trips. Add a bit of freeway driving under 70 mph and I'm 23-24 mpg. Best I've had on a complete tank full was 22 but usually, I'll end up at 18-19 with a few 20's mixed in when all the stars align. Overall since I've had the truck, 18.5. which is right in line with published specs. Stock tires and no mods which adversely affect mileage.

 

I use cruise a ton on my 2021. I didn’t know there was option of NOT using adaptive!

would you let me know how? Very much appreciated

I’d say give it time to adjust- the way you drive will be the determining factor (in stock form). I bought mine new in January of 2019 and I now have 102k miles on it. I’m in 4WD a lot so let’s leave that out....my commute to my main office (120 miles round trip) is on a rural highway ( a few small mountains) and 60-70 MPH speed limits. I rarely see more than 10-20 cars on my trip. I average 21-23 MPG - I always use the adaptive CC as I love it.

I took a trip on Tuesday approximately 800 miles total- fairly flat terrain- I averaged 24.2 MPG ( again used CC). My around town mileage is tough to determine because I often have a trailer hauling things ( I have a horse farm) and I often get off the main roads and hit 4WD. I probably drive like a grandpa- or you can say I don’t drive like my 19 YO son ( who drives a 2002 lifted Tacoma).

The Tacoma is not an economy vehicle but I think for what it provides ( Comfort, reliability ,off road capabilities), it a terrific little truck. Mine is stock and I'm on my 3rd set of tires (first 2 sets were the original GY Kevlars) - now I have the Michelin Defender M/S (stock size). Enjoy and be safe.

 

Press and hold the cruise on/off button instead of just tapping it. Instead of showing "Radar Ready" the display will show, "Constant Speed Control Ready"

Simply press and hold the cruise button until it changes to regular cruise. You will see the cruise icon change on the instrument cluster.

Driving like the nicest grandma so I’m doing better! 17 MPG!!

 

2017 TRD Sport with stock tires, no lift, a topper with 78" Thule bars, OVtune premium tune and 93 octane gas averages 17-19 around town, 21-24 on the highway (70 mph and below). With the factory tune and 87 gas, the truck got 15-17 around town and 19-22 on the highway. I've used roof racks for decades, and in my experience installing Thule square bars cuts highway mileage by 10-12%, so if I was willing to remove the rack when I didn't need it, I probably would be getting 23-25 on the highway. All of these numbers are with summer gas in flat to rolling terrain, not using cruise. Winter gas knocks about 2 mpg off across the board, and using cruise in rolling or hilly terrain will destroy your mpg - the ECU thinks the truck needs to turn 5500 rpm to climb even moderate hills at highway speeds when cruise is on.

Worst tank mileage I ever saw was 10.5 driving across Kansas with cruise set at 80, 4 people in cab, bed full of rafting and camping gear, roof loaded with whitewater kayaks, and hitch rack loaded with 4 mountain bikes. Without cruise in those same conditions, mileage jumped to 15. Best single trip mileage I ever saw was 29.7 over about 50 miles when my daughter lost her wallet somewhere along a local 4 lane (left it on her roof), and we ran that section at 45 mph (minimum legal speed) in the right lane with hazards on, trying to spot the wallet.

Overall, I've been pleasantly surprised at how efficient my truck can be when it's not being worked hard. Over the 3 years I've owned it, it's averaged 18.5 mpg. That's pretty amazing for a true 4x4 crew cab truck. By contrast, my wife's Pilot averaged just 16.3 mpg over its lifetime.

 

Lol my truck gets 9 mpg I recently went on a trip to San Diego and on a 9-hour trip I got 14.2 mi per gallon on the highway but around town I'm 9 mi per gallon sometimes less

 

I did some 1/4 mile runs and it had showed 5.x mpg

2020 TRD OR 4x4 AT......14-15 city 16 - 18 Hwy....consistent as the sunrise. I've never seen the trip or tank average close to 20 MPG and don't see any chance ever seeing it. These unicorn stories of 25+ MPG are pretty amazing.....

 

Same truck as yours (presuming you're stock) and my last tank I got 382 miles/22mpg out of 17.3 gallons. All trips on this tank were less than 30 miles long. Ultimately it's all about how heavy you are on the loud pedal, how observant you are of upcoming lights and traffic conditions and if you've done any modifications to the vehicle.

 

Fair enough. I drive to get where I'm going (for reference, I am in my 50's and have not had a traffic ticket in decades) and don't believe I am "heavy on the loud pedal".....and my truck is bone stock. I've got a 2015 Mustang GT with a supercharger and I can get 21 - 22 on highway trips. We own 2 Tacos, nearly identical '18 and '20 trucks and I've taken both on the same, 500 mile round trip and never seen more than 18 MPG.
