Hmmm, when he says maintenance I mean what could really be wrong with the brakes though?

A lot of enduro riders don't run carbon wheels because they have to finish the race with the same wheels they started. If they break a wheel on a stage then they're done for the whole race. That's why he says "you can't dent it and it's too high a risk." Also why @honda50r makes a very valid point about not being Sam Hill...

edit: maybe you were just pointing out @honda50r making a comment though...

So I can say “because I’m Sam Hill” now when I’m too cheap to pay for carbon?

Trailforks works REALLY well in Utah. Mostly because (little history here), a little site called "Utah Mountain Biking" Was putting trails on a website way back in the 90s. It still gets updated and used fairly heavily today. Some dude back then decided to take all that data and port it onto a map system. I forget what he called it. Pinkbike/Trailforks saw the system and realized that his system could do so much more than they were able to so they bought the whole thing, data and all. So Trailforks works REALLY well in Utah because there's already been a ton of foundational leg work. After even talking to the guy about how trailforks works on a technical level, there's been a lot of time and effort to introduce ease of use and functionality improvements. It's no small feat. In fact, I would daresay that TF wasn't making any money at all for PB. I mean, no ads for a while on the app and minimal ads on the website...That said, from what I understand, only a small percentage of users are actually contributing to the reports and trail updates. I HEARD that TF will give deals or even free subscriptions if you contribute HEAVILY. But that's just rumor.

I use both TF and MTB Project, depending on which seems better for the area that I’m in, at least to find trails in a new area. Lately though I’m using maps.me or even Google when I’m out on a trail because their coverage has gotten so good. As a regular rider in my local area, I expect conditions to change so rarely even think about checking one of the trail apps for that purpose. Also, I am really reluctant to start paying for something that was once free (esp MTB Project which is an REI product and I already spend too much money there). However, when you compare this to the old days of paying two bucks (yeah, I said old days) for a Forest Service map, if you were lucky to find an open ranger station, or the same for a blurry Xerox copy of hand-drawn map at the local bike shop, $12 a year seems pretty cheap.

I was just pointing out I noticed Alex on there.

I did, he said they worked. Need bleeding and new pads.
I like my Code RSC, rated best brakes by many website, take that with a grain of salt though, but I'd prefer the Saints because the mineral oil spilling on frame vs DOT4.

That's me and I think I brought it up recently sports cars and whatnot. Sure I spend more than the average joe on bike stuff, but I'm at camaro level. Goes faster than the average corolla and I give a rip about things like cylinder counts and whatnot. But, if I brought it to a track against the real deal - man, I'm going to get smoked!

I could spend more for lighter stuff and better stuff. But what I have does what I want, point of diminishing returns etc. I like carbon wheels, but I don't use 'em.

Sounds like I need to spend some more research on TF before I pass judgement on them. I will reserve judgement for now, I guess. For me though, I just hate the modern subscription services everything has gone to, for example Photoshop went to subscription instead of buying the software, and that mindset of F adobe probably carried over to F TF/pinkbike for doing a subscription app.

Oh dude. I remember when Adobe went subscription. Pissed the hell out of me. It was just on the cusp of too expensive for me to use them. So I stopped. I can't even really buy a new camera because if I do, I won't have a lightroom that will read the raw files. lolol. But yeah, I hate the subscription based stuffs. I do my best to avoid spending on subscriptions where possible. :/ Even though I have a ton already. Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, TF, etc. I'm smart.

Prime - I use it every month
    Netflex - Same
Spotify/YT Music - Same if not daily (trying to kill Spotify and just go to YT now though)

I have Gaia, to be fair, too.

I'm not against it, if you use it every month. Chances are I will probably (if I end up on the TF train) using it for the summers and then canceling it every winter for a few months. But I said earlier too, I usually go out with a bunch of other people or when leading, really know the trails myself. So, might not even be worth it. I don't give a rip about tracking my rides.

So, the whole comment I'm not Sam Hill also applies to why I could run Carbon and get away with it.
Mere mortals won't bust a carbon rim just riding a trail or mountain.

lol. well, i mean...the ONLY reason I have disney+ is for mandalorian. I don't even use Hulu that often. :/ Oh well.

I track my rides on my garmin. sync it with garmin connect which syncs with strava.

Lol. I haven't busted a carbon rim. but I know people who have. Mostly because they shouldn't have been riding the rim which was already knicked and defintiely on its way out.

I have seen one get busted at Vietnam. When those things fail, it's spectacular.

Reminds me of when we had a 110PSI BMX go on a subway. Whole platform ran away and we were laughing our asses off, and then "detained". :ballchain:

I have strava but free. I don't have fancy watches or whatnot. I use it for tracking hikes or rides if I'm with the dog, but otherwise I just wing it.

. I used MTB Project in Utah a couple of weeks ago and it worked fine but I went to one trail system so my experience is limited. I think the feature where the app talks to your watch for directions that @abacall mentioned is where I see a value in an app like this.

I absolutely hate subscription services. It is the new business model, hell its even how car washes operate these days.

I think the guys at Trail Forks are probably genius and so is their business model. Am I mad that I did not think of it? Sure, but would I trick people into collecting all this data so I could then in turn charge them to access it? No

Essentially, they created a platform where the public could share trail information to include map metadata (crowdsourcing). Then they decided once they got enough users and the tasks became arduous that they would sell it back to us for a convenience fee. What they did was unethical in my book. Had they been a little more upfront about their intent to charge fees once they were satisfied with the amount of data we gave them for free it may be different. Or if they actually paid people to collect data that would be totally different. $12 is a drop in the bucket for most folks and thats how they want you to feel. However, when you look at the total amount of users it is probably quite a sum of money.

Try MTB Project it is free and is probably "good enough" for your purposes.
