I think they have to waste all that space to get the load rating, which isn't something you have to worry about when you build your own.

They make sense for a fleet customer or for someone who doesn't want to DIY and wants a drop-in solution that is durable and fits perfectly and gives total faith in carrying a heavy load. You could probably even get a local carpenter to custom build you something better at the price point though

You can get several plastic storage bins for $50, they're relatively waterproof, light and easily removable.

I have a hard time finding good plastic bins that don't crack and break easily without spending a fortune.

The best ones are the softer plastic, not the hard brittle kind. Rubbermaid or equivalent are good and you can find them at Target for pretty cheap.

I bought the black and yellow ones from Home Depot and while they "work" I haven't been real thrilled with them.

Yeah, all that plastic stuff only has a shelf life of a few years and less the more weight you put in them.

If water isn't an issue, I've always been a fan of milk crates, especially the 6 gallon version, they last a lifetime.

Just built one for my cousins 4runner. Total cost for everything was $400. Took about a whole day with the right tools. It's was actually easier than I expected. I only have a pic of the unfinished product but everything now has been painted and carpeted.
