Heaviest towable travel trailer for a 3rd gen OR??

The limiting factor is always payload and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Payload is different on every truck, yours is printed on a sticker on the drivers door jamb as is the GVWR. Your truck will easily PULL 6500 lbs, the issue is that the trucks suspension probably won't handle the tongue weight of a trailer much over 4000 lbs unless you only have a skinny 150 lb driver in the cab.

The listed payload on most Tacoma's range between 1000-1300 lbs. It is possible to get closer to 2000 lbs with a stripped 4X2 Access Cab with a 4 cyl engine and a manual transmission. The GVWR is the same, but when you subtract the actual weight of the truck the number left over is payload. The heavier the truck the less payload available. It is best to actually weigh your truck and subtract that from GVWR. Many people modify their trucks and the printed payload number is no longer accurate

Lets say your trailers loaded weight comes in at 6000 lbs and you have 1200 lbs payload. Figure 13% of trailer weight as tongue weight. Then for trailers over 5000 lbs add another 100 lbs for the required Weight Distribution Hitch. A 6000 lb trailer will put almost 900 lbs on your tongue. That would only leave about 300 lbs for you, passengers and cargo in the truck. I weigh 220, my wife 140. That would be a no-go for us even with nothing else in the truck.

Figure out the Payload for YOUR truck then do the math. Generally speaking 4000-4500 lbs LOADED weight is a sensible maximum for most Tacoma's. That means a dry trailer weight of around 3500-4000 lbs.

In that case, it makes zero sense to tow a trailer out there. Buy a used one in AZ, pay $200 or $300 bucks to have it setup in the campground and call it a day. When you get tired of living in a trailer park, sell it for about what you paid and move on. Done. ;-)

Let's face it. Tacoma's strong point is not towing. I personally would not tow a 5000 lb travel trailer more than a few miles. Defiantly would not get on a 75 mph interstate for any extended distance. A nice Dodge Ram with 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel might be overkill but would make me feel a lot better about towing.

 

There is more than just gross trailer weight to consider. Gross vehicle weight, along with tongue weight, are critical. My dad totaled a Tacoma in west Texas pulling a small travel trailer too fast through the wind farms. He was going too fast, had the trailer loaded wrong (all the weight at the back), and a wind gust just grabbed it and took it off the road. The travel trailer disintegrated.

 

I have a Jayco 224bh. I've chimed in before, but that's approximately a 26' long trailer, dry weight around 4500, max gvwr 5500. I have a brake controller, weight distributing hitch with sway bar. Long story short, its about the top I would want to do with the truck. Do I go above 65 with it? No, and I wouldn't recommend it to others, but everyone has a different comfort level. Like others have said, the real sticking point is being legally overloaded even if you're technically under 6400 lbs towing capacity because of payload. You're most likely somewhere around 1000lbs to start, a 5500 trailer is going to easily eat up 550-700 lbs payload dry out the gate, a few passengers and gear in the truck and youre legally over. If that's a concern of yours, reconsider. If you're just curious about "if it'll do it", yeah, but not as nicely as a 1/2 ton. Hope this helps.

Full disclosure I am waiting for the opportunity to upgrade my wifes vehicle to a durango/expedition/tahoe to decomission the tacoma from sole towing vehicle. Just explaining my mindset.

 

maybe a few miles up the road. I haul heavy loads on flatbeds but RVs are a different breed all together. To haul an RV cross country I'd stay under 3500 lbs.

 

I would highly recommend you loose at least a 1k lbs and drive safe, because it ‘ll be a struggle on hills and wind. No matter what circumstances are driving you now, it is your decision to either drive or be driven.

Too heavy. I have a 4000 lb dry weight that did ok but have yet to haul it fully loaded. Look into an aftermarket AT cooler too. I agree with the idea of buying your camper in Az and avoid the cross country trip with a heavy trailer.

 

Towing this monster. 24 ft, 28ft to the tongue. 5800lbs dry. 6k easy loaded. (Never towed it loaded).



Flat road...put my foot off the brake, truck moves it like theres nothing. 3% grade, yeah...definitely there in the back, jumping 2800rpm from usual 2000 rpm. 40mph piece of cake. Havent tried mountain roads. 50mph still felt in control at 2800-3000rpm even down hill taking it slow. When towing I would never go above 55 anyways (socal laws).

But then again, I have 4:88 gears 33” tires (lighter side 33” toyo 255/85/17), air bags, 2” aal, with aftermarket trans cooler

I am running 400 lbs of gear, body armor, roof rack, skids, nerf bars above stock weight. (4800lbs weighted). Tekonsha p3 brake controller is a must and by default settings, the trailer brakes me! Considering the weight, I am literally a 1 ton truck with the air bags.

Currently in discussion of possible super charger or regearing again to 5:29 would help. Not planning for top speed, just easier on the engine/transmission. I dont care about mpg...but 91 octane only running 13mpg so far.

I am new to this as well. But we loved the trailer so much, my family is willing to work around it, even if it means for a tundra if the taco just cant handle it.

I agree. Make your cross country journey pleasant & safe, and just buy a big trailer, once your there.

TT manufacturers often advertise the weight as dry weight without options. I have a 19 foot that was advertised at 3300 lbs but was 3700 lbs when weighed at the factory before delivery. We travel light and we are maybe 4500 lbs when traveling. As mentioned before you need to consider the weight in your tow vehicle. I towed it with a Frontier with weight distribution and sway control hitch. A 6500 lb rating with no problems so I’m sure the Tacoma will do fine.

When buying a trailer you need to do your own research and not depend on the dealer.

 

I have a 20 foot TT that weighs 3400 lb dry. WD hitch and anti-sway bar. Redarc brake controller.
I tow the thing dry with the 2016 TRD with a tow package. " My recent LA freeway experience was SUPER sketchy with big rigs shooting past and blowing all over the road. Im sure the transmission will overheat if I try to pull again to the high desert again during the summer. Adding 40 gallons of water to the tank that sits pretty far forward...forget it. Does not feel safe at all.

I have decided that I can "get away with it" towing this fairly light trailer with the Tacoma....until I don't. I'm in the market for a Tundra, and even they are only marginal for towing .

 

I tow 5k with my Taco, no issues. Problem is people want to go 75mph with a load. I keep it around 50-55 and all is good. Tows great. Trailer has electric brakes and truck has air adjustable bag lift system for no sag. Runs purfectly. Tranny temps are normal even at ambient 98 degrees in the summer. Love it when I pull up to a stop with a 5k load and the guy across from me is wondering why the heck isn't that truck sagging lol.

 

"But that trailer will drive the truck, rather than the truck driving the trailer." I saw evidence of this on I-70 west of Denver a couple of years ago. A Tacoma in the median with a big trailer in tow. I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD OR and to be honest I don't want to pull anything other than my utility trailer.

 

Hmm...wish I could figure out what to do different. I MIGHT be able to hit 75 on a flat with a death wish. usually running 60 on the flat and anywhere from 35+ depending on the hill. My sense it that my issue is high tongue weight. Its a 1995 trailer, probably not very sophisticated design for weight distribion. I will be reducing the propane (from two 30 lb tanks to one or two 20 lb tanks). not sure what else to do aside from more truck.

 

Now I would probably go higher speed than 55 in the flats if nobody was near me and I knew I would not have to brake etc. I wouldn't have an issue with that at all. My load is very well balanced with my air bag system. Perfectly level. I don't even know it's back there actually. Best mod I did to my truck. 4wheelparts talked me into it and I am glad they did. Hesitant at first but would do it again in a heartbeat.
