It bugs the shit out of me that my shifter has R - N - D on it.

R should be B for Backwards

    N is cool as is.

D should be F for Forward.

Reverse can be thought of as a complete change of direction or action. If that's the case I could be driving Backwards and then shirt to Forward., and that would be a complete change of direction so I'd actually be reversing even thou I was going forward.

Something else that bugs the shit out of me is the placement and operation of our turn signals.

Why is it located on the left side of the wheel of steering and who the fuck came up with up is for a right turn and down is for a left turn? If they placed it on top of the steering column, you could push it right for a right turn and left for a left turn.

I know for a fact this is a big problem in Florida because 75% of the ass holes on the road can't figure out how to use them.

The definition of the word reverse as a verb is "move backward." Therefore, it is correct, as your vehicle moves backwards while you are in reverse.

I will give you the "Drive" one, though. I've always wondered why they call it "drive." Technically, you also drive in reverse.

It's probably because the roots of the terms are all about gearing, not direction. You're using a vague definition of the verb "reverse" instead of the noun. You put it "in reverse," which means you put it in "reverse gear," not "backward":

reverse gear n. a gear which allows a mechanism to move or work in the reverse direction from usual; esp. one which allows a vehicle to travel in reverse without reversing the rotation of its engine; in later use frequently figurative.
1835 Mechanics' Mag. July 7/1 The other improvements affect the force-pump, eccentrics, and reverse gear.
1907 R. B. Whitman Motor-car Princ. viii. 121 When the reverse gear is introduced..the square shaft is revolved in the same direction as the counter-shaft, reversing the rotation of the driving wheels.
1940 Constr. Methods Apr. 110/2 Wrecking is, in reality, construction in reverse gear.
1973 W. McCarthy Detail iii. 204 David..tried to accustom himself to the British car. He found the reverse gear and slowly backed out.
1979 Guardian 7 July 9/4 In the present era, everything has gone into reverse gear. New building is postponed, new hospitals..cannot open.
2003 HomeDIY Dec. 12/2 The key features are a reverse gear (so that the drill can be used for taking out screws as well as..putting them in) and variable torque.

Regarding "drive," the term's earliest found usage as such is from the '60s and refers to automatics; there may be some influence from the much-older version of "drive" that originates in the 17th C. and has to do with "the action or an act of driving, impelling, urging onward." The idea being that the gears on an automatic car are compelled or urged to move to their next ratio. Here's the etymology of the version that irks you and Wood:

    b. In a motor vehicle with automatic transmission: the position of the selector lever in which the gears are automatically changed as required.

1963 Which? Car Suppl. Oct. 116/2 The selector mechanism was a little inclined to snatch at Drive.
1965 R. Priestley & T. H. Wisdom Good Driving v. 40 D for Drive. In this position, which is usual for all driving conditions, the transmission starts in first gear and automatically changes up into second and then top gear.
1965 R. Priestley & T. H. Wisdom Good Driving v. 41 With the engine running, Drive is selected, the handbrake released.
1967 Times 31 Mar. 3/7 The coroner said the selector lever must have been in ‘drive’.
1970 D. MacKenzie Kyle Contract (1971) 13 He drove out of Palamos... He shifted into drive and settled back

    Duh, guys.

Yep performance built automatic transmissions are fun !!!! , especially when it's a full manual valve body . Then add a 4500 stall converter and a transbtake then the fun factor increases

Regarding a center mounted turn signal stalk:
Upon airbag deployment, with one or both hands placed at the top of the steering wheel, hands and arms are often directed into the top, windshield and mirror at high speed, often causing contusions, lacerations and fractures to hands, fingers, wrists and arms.

In that way, a center column mounted turn signal design under constant use would not be ideal.

Sometimes front seat passengers brace themselves by placing their hands on the dashboard prior to an impact. The passenger airbag can cause those same injuries to both hands and/or arms.

Keeping your hands placed at the sides or bottom of the steering wheel could possibly help to decrease the severity of hand and arm injuries caused by airbag deployment.*

I think the OP should be looking at old English vehicles. They are odd enough to satisfy his desires for something different--like turn signal stalk just above the horn button.
