Snow Chains

Are there major advantages/ disadvantages between tire chains versus tire cables?

Which type of traction aid works best (or doesn't work) with airing down to 10 - 12 psi?

There are so many variants of each. Any particular detail about the chain locking mechanism that works best?

One disavantage on both is when a cable or link breaks it beats the wheels hsg or fender to death.

Cables for street. Chains for offroad. I prefer the V-link style for heavy offroad/snow use. Better make sure they are tight or they will destroy wheel well/abs/everything else like mentioned above. I use about 3 bunjee cords (6 connections) per wheel to keep the chains from smacking around.

You can't use chains up front on 2005+. They hit the upper control arm. There are some low clearance cables that MIGHT clear the control arms.
For road use there is a product called autosock that I think would clear in front and would not cause much/any damage if they failed. The Colorado DOT
says the autosock is as good as chains and they don't count cables as a susbstitute for chains, so they must be decent?

 

I have used chains on the front of my 07 it's tight.

 

Buy spare bungees. Be prepared.

I bought a pair of Rud chains for my 2WD before I went north 2 weeks ago and had to use them on the way back last week. Easy to go on and worked great.

 

Buy a pair of chain link R/R pliers and I always carry some bailing wire incase I need to tie off a broken link till I can replace it.

Cables that have the diagonal pattern are great on road , i never broke a set yet , personally wouldnt try em off road. I use them at work if needed on pickups.

Chains work great on road too but arent as smooth, no choice there on our bigger trucks 16000 gvw weight and up. Used to use them offroad/ on gravel roads back in the 80s (yea im old). like previous posts said , bring pliers , extra bunjees , bailing wire to hold loose chain ends also take 4' and bend it in half till you have many strands and twist with pliers , threaded links help a lot too, 2 sizes have 8 handy
