This whole K&D tuning venture has shaped up to be a really kick ass thing for a lot of folks. The network and the communication are solid all around - as solid as the tunes themselves, and it’s just a damn pleasure to be a part of.
Thank you Kreg and Dave for the opportunity to make Tacoma’s great again!

Howdy. Any help? First day with KDMAX 6.0 and getting bad mileage. Setup for 33” tires and stock gearing and I believe reg octane/reg tip in.

Comments thus far would agree with the statements of improved performance, quickness of power delivery, smoother shifting, sporty sport mode and shift lock is A+.

As @SearArtist mentioned, putting down some miles today so was able to do some testing with the mileage.

Wind: calm, roads: flat, tires: 41 psi.

TEST 1: 100 miles HWY NO CC
Avg. speed: 71 mph, Fuel: 14.5 mpg

    TEST 2: 100 miles HWY W/CC
Avg. speed: 71 mph, Fuel: 15.2 mpg

TEST 3: 70 miles BACK ROADS
Avg. speed: 52 mph, Fuel: 15.4 mpg

From the pump figures: Fully topped off gas tank (21.2 gal) went 306 miles for an avg of 14.4 mpg using 87 octane.

Using scan gauge monitored load, mpg and HP across gears 4, 5 & 6.

    4GR hp @ load
    41-50: 60-70 hp, 15 mpg
    51-60: 80 hp, 12-14 mpg
    61-70: 100 hp, 10-11 mpg
    71-80: 120 hp, 9-10 mpg
    81-90: 125 hp, 7-8 mpg

    5GR hp @ load
    51-60: 50-70 hp, 14-18 mpg
    61-70: 70-80 hp, 15 mpg
    71-80: 80-90 hp, 13 mpg
    81-90: 100-110 hp, 11 mpg

    6GR hp @ load
    41-50: 40-50 hp, 19-24 mpg
    51-60: 90 hp, 21 mpg
    61-70: 60-70 hp, 18 mpg
    71-80: 70-80 hp, 14-15 mpg
    81-90: 90 hp, 14 mpg

Got 450 more miles of flat highway to go, so don’t mind running another series of tests, perhaps with RPMs? Attempting a 3rd highway travel with 89 octane.

Kinda disheartened by this. I was 16.5 mpg on avg with 265 size falken ATs and fully loaded at 6000# over mountainous roads. Now I’m less weight on flat straight highways with a fresh alignment and new 33’s but seeing 14.5 mpg.

I doubt the increase in tire size could negate the weight loss and improved roads for a loss in mpg. Seems to be the tune. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks... back to :burnrubber:

Tire size does play a factor! Looks like you are slowly improving. The sweet spot for these trucks and mileage with the larger tires is at about 65mph 2000 to 2100 RPM. My truck is pretty heavy on 33.5" MT's i am getting a solid 17.4 on the highway at 70+mph. I have gotten 20.4 when doing 65 or less but who wants to drive that slow! I am running 91 octane. When i was on 87 i was getting less mpg but don't have the exact #'s. Give it a few tanks and see what it is averaging.

Did you reset LV/AT with the flash to KDMax?

Cool. I know resetting can cause poor mileage until it “relearns”.

The scan gauge is also reading mpg at the ecu level, which isn’t going to be accurate for anything other than stock sized tires.

my Speedo is calibrated and it’s dead on. The computer reads lower mpg than my cluster, when I run my OBD fusion dash board to monitor things.

I think he recently had the TSB done so that might also be playing a factor. Worse case I can have someone in FL reset LV for me and see if it straightens things out.

I have techstream and can reset LV/AT if that won’t interfere with tune.

TSB is 04B04 and has about 3mo/5k miles on it.

Speed over ground and mileage is being measured by GPS not odometer or speedometer.

89 octane seems to be improving highway miles. Cruising @ 1800 in 5GR and getting 16 mpg. Just any substantial load increase takes me back to 10-11.

    (according to dash/SG intel)

Also, other than Speedo off by -3, dash + scan gauge matched gps calcs for fuel consumption.

You can do the LV reset if you want, will not mess up the tune.
I did have one guy getting worse MPG's (out of 100's), we reset LV and it came back to normal.

    Copy. Thanks Kregg & others.

A lot of the confusion comes from my inexperience with being on 33s, so I appreciate the constructive reasoning.

Will give another couple tank fills and see where it settles before reset, and consider an inline calibrator to fix the other ECU discrepancies there after.

If I haven’t expressed my joy in you all’s work well enough, I apologize. It’s tremendous work what you and the other VF tuners have done. Cheers and will report back with more findings.
