Just happen to me on my 19 TRD O/R. Have 31k miles. Like a lot of others I washed it and parked it in the garage overnight and today it did not want to budge at all... was the passengers side rear. Put it in 4low with the locker on and was able to get the ebrake to release. Does make a loud noise when finally disengages. The locker was the trick for me. 4low wasn’t enough.

Same issues happened to me today as well. 2017, 76k miles. Honestly this has been happening for some time, I usually just jiggle the handle and rock the truck back and for and eventually it would unstick. Today I had to pull the drum off and spin the star wheel to get it to release.

Everything looks good apart from the jack. Try to find some wood (2x6 or something) to put under if you have to jack up on gravel...

We at work stop washing cars when it gets too cold. We've had doors and brakes freeze (e-brake not on).
Yet some customers still complain that we didn't wash their car.

This just happened to me. Brakes locked as I just turned the corner at the end of my street. I confess to a mix of worry, confusion and blinding hot rage. Lol.

Giving er in 4wd in reverse seemed to work. The really loud clunk happens when I stopped and when I broke free. I am a little stressed as I go hunting this Saturday and there is no space to reverse where we park on a mountain logging road.

Not freezing here and I didn’t wash it. Is there anything I can do to increase my chances of not getting stuck in the woods? Does it seem like changing the brakes works? Maybe it’s that spring thing a poster above mentioned?

Wheels still on? Or did you have to jack it up and take the wheels off?

Left the wheels on, literally hammered the backside of the drums.

I believe this just happened to me. 2020 4x4 offroad manual with 10k miles. Took it in to get tires rotated and oil changed, they washed it after the service. I drove it home and parked it overnight with parking brake on like I always do when parking. The next day I tried to drive it and couldn't get out of my garage. Seemed like both rear wheels were locked up, maybe it was just the rear driver side. 4 hi barely made the truck move, tried forward and reverse. I didn't want to lock the rear diff because I didn't want to blow up the diff as I wasn't positive what was going on. Jacked up the rear left wheel and could rotate the wheel by hand around a mm or so back and forth. Just had it towed to the dealership. Freezing temps where I am at.

Happening to me constantly haven't used my e-brake in years. I've been forcing it to release in 4Lo but that only works on pavement. Tonight it got worse and is now grinding and popping in both forward and reverse until it lets go and drives normally. Sometimes feels like my rear brakes are on as I'm driving. Fresh drums and shoes, wondering which parts to replace as I can see nothing wrong in there except a bent bell crank. Is there an assembly with part #'s. Should I get new backplates and e-brake cables?

Guys quit complaining. Even though no other current vehicles seem to have this problem, Toyota says it's perfectly normal. You'd think that whoever regulates vehicles would force Toyota to recall and solve the problem.

Having the same issues and my truck is still under warranty. But if they dont deem it covered under warranty, I would have to pay the 170 diagnostic fee. debating if I should just go ebrake less instead of coughing up 170. Has anyone taken it to the dealership and had it covered under warranty?

I am currently dealing with this issue on my 2017 Tacoma SR 4x4. It has left me stranded 3 times now, once skiing which was a sketchy late night. Now again with no e brake engaged on completely flat ground. Heating it this time made it easier to get onto a flat bed but this is crazy. I called Toyota and they said they have never heard of the issue.... case number they gave me is 2102112714 this deserves a recall. Replacement of the cable by the dealership doesn't mean you will be in the clear they are extremely exposed and susceptible to moisture/freezing.

Hey everybody. This just happened to me this morning.
Cleaned the truck inside and out this weekend. Pulled up on the parking brake to clean (I never use the brake.)
Went to drive this morning. Pulled out on the street, put it in drive and bam. Rear passenger wheel locked up. Shifted in and out of gear and limped it back in to the driveway.
Tried the "reverse when engaged" trick mentioned, and it worked. All good to go.

Took it into the dealer and it was the parking brake freezing. It was raining all weekend, but just hovering around freezing (Toronto area, Canada).
But apparently there's a service bulletin covering this exact issue. So warranty is covering it. Parts on order.

Its a seal issue. Water and other gunk get in the drum, and you know what happens next.
They are going to add or replace parts (dont know exactly yet).

    Hope this helps.

Do you happen to know the service bulletin number?

Did they "replicate" the problem at the dealership or see that it was frozen? When my parking brake froze the morning/day after a car wash I had it towed into the dealership because I couldn't get it to release and wasn't positive what was going on. My truck was towed to the dealership in the evening and they looked at it the next morning. They said they could drive it normally and therefore couldn't replicate the problem and didn't look into it further. I assume the brake released when they had to shake the truck off the tow truck (flat bed) or the temps were high enough that it unfroze. I couldn't even get them to look at the brakes and they said they had never heard of the problem before. This was mid December 2020.

I didn't get the service bulletin number. When they do the repair next week, or whenever the parts come in, I'll post it.

And if they did try to replicate it, they wouldnt have been able to. Once it knocked loose I was able to drive to the dealership.
It was locking up a little randomly though. But I was able to get a revolution or two on the tires before it banged in.

No abs symbol or brake assist symbols lit up. So it's pretty fair to guess that it is a mechanical and not sensor related issue.

Just to clarify. It was "locking up randomly" before it came loose.
Not on the drive to the shop.
