Tundras are 1/2 ton tacomas are midsized smaller than that so they would technically be what use to be the 1/4 ton. But this day and age that rating doesn't mean squat compared to when it was started.

You'll be over the GVWR which isn't road-legal. The truck will handle it just fine, however. The GVWR for North American vehicles is set low because all the federal tests for emergency handling, stability control calibrations, etc. are done at GVWR. That's how you get 5-lug Hilux pickups with 4-cylinder engines advertising one-ton payload in third world countries. If you're able to drive like in a third world country, you'll be fine...

I've had to do something similar a few times. What I did was have a family member come along with a camry. I put some of the boxes in the camry. The rest of the boxes went in the tacoma. I was probably still over payload rating, but it was fine. Drive carefully obviously.

One does what one has to as for 1500 pounds to me that is not even close to what I would call Heavy.

I would not want to be hauling 50 loads but one slow and easy for the win .

is it ideal No if I had a larger vehicle I would not even think of doing it

I agree with you, that's why I specifically used the words considered and on paper and also mentioned that number includes everything. The AC 5-lug V6 is rated at 850 lbs, and once you take into consideration typical fat-assed American driver weight? It's a 1/4 ton truck at best.

With all the weight I typically carry (shell, bumpers, skids, winch, etc) including my fat ass at 240lbs? My 4WD AC, rated at 1200lbs, is a 1/4 ton truck in all reality...manual be damned.

Thanks for this info, that's great to know. It always seemed to me that the GVWR's were insanely low and never made any sense to me.

Find a used car dealer and take a full size truck for a test drive!
Tell them your bringing it to your mechanic to check it out and for nice drive.
They will drool over the Tacoma until you get back.

Remember, fuel is NOT part of the estimated payload capacity; designers account for that.
