    Hi Everyone,

My neighbor has a 2015 TRD Offroad with drive assist and he says he's been having issues with it. He noticed I drive a 2012 Tacoma and asked if I've been experiencing this issue:

When he shifts from Park to Drive, or Neutral to Drive, he's hearing a clunking sound from under the truck towards the front. He said it almost sounds like something is engaging like you might hear with 4x4 shifts or engaging lockers, but he said he's just in basic RWD and hears it. I told him I haven't had any issues with my 2012 but that I'd check on TW for tips/ advice.

Anyone else experienced anything like this?

    Thanks!

Sounds like you need to head over to your neighbors when his wife is out shopping and lube up his shaft. Because his shaft has been neglected. His wife isn’t servicing it properly, probably been months since it’s been touched even. But just because she doesn’t think about it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have needs. It needs attention. If she isn’t going to do it, he’s eventually going to go out and look for a professional. You you need to head over and get down on your knees to look for the 5 zerk fittings that are in the u joints of the front and rear prop shafts.

I would start by making sure the rear axle ubolts are torqued down to around 70 ft lbs

I had a clunking when shifting and in neutral sometimes and mine werent tight

Tell him before putting in park or letting off the brake to engage the e brake then foot on break shift from park to drive/reverse then disengage e brake. Just a lot of pressure on the trans.

edit: this is normal btw. My 2nd and 3rd gen did it along with most of the Tacoma’s we have in our work fleet.
