I put dog hair down to keep animals away from my garden. Works perfectly. Maybe ill start stuffing some inside the fenders.

Not sure how practical or beneficial this would be, but what if you added split-loom covering to every part of the wiring harness possible.
    Maybe this would:
    1) stop them from biting in the first place
    2) if they do bite, it would offer some more protection at least.

Sorry this happened OP, this doesn't seem to be a huge issue in my area but I'm always worried when camping.

Edit: Looking at the pictures again, it seems like the only spots that were safe was the split-loom sections. If you could add split-loom where it isn't currently and also make sure it goes all the way to the connector so no wires are exposed at all, that could help prevent this from happening again.

That's a good idea and I hadn't noticed that. I'll definitely be doing that when it comes home!

It sounds like you really pissed the squirrels off, did you run one of them over lately? You might try some anti-cribbing spray, they sell it at feed stores, it keeps animals from chewing on wood in stalls and would cover your wires above and below the engine and the brakelines and sensor wires under the chassis. But I think the only sure way you’re gonna keep squirrels out if you are parking outside overnight is to do the same thing they do for porcupines at trailheads in Canada.

Wow, I'd get dropped off. No way I'd park there with or without chicken wire.

Wow, so the park system provides those fences for you to use? At first look i thought people made their own because they knew better

No they provide it, better than having to call a tow truck for everyone in the parking lot.

I've heard a few different theories about that, also including that the current in the wires isn't enough to hurt them, but creates some sort of euphoric effect on them. (Or at least that's what they told my grandmother when squirrels got the wires on her Subaru). I've also heard moth balls are a good way to keep them away as well.

I had a similar experience as you and found that squirrel(s) had been building a nest on top of the engine as well as eating several wires. After having it repaired at the dealer, I hung a mesh bag of mothballs in the engine bay. I was worried that the smell would fill the truck cabin, but it didn’t. The fresh air seems to enter near the base of the windshield. It’s been about 9 months with no squirrels in my truck and I do live in an area where squirrels are constantly running around throughout the year. Good luck with whatever you try. I hope it works out for you!

That's not a bad idea either, I may try that as well. Thanks!

Any experience with this gizmo? I assume it's hardwired?

I've seen them build nests in airboxes, carburetor's and on intakes of vehicles, boats, lawnmowers and snowmobiles that have a strong odor of fuel and a greasy mess...

Wow, the ultrasonic rodent repeller‘s might actually be a good choice, there’s a lot of research cited on Google scholar about their effectiveness. Some use standard batteries but there are other models that are 12 V that can be wired directly into the truck battery and are very low amperage so they can essentially be left on all the time without battery drain. The best types appear to be some units that alter their frequency in addition to the tone cycle, I’m trying to find one of these. Another study pointed out how directional the high frequency sounds are, so you may need two on each side of the engine compartment.
