After 4 or 5 comfortable days we are back to shitty cold again, furnace has been on. Did have the AC on in the truck the other day and it smelled horrible, ordered a new cabin filter and some vent cleaner.

1988 Ford Festiva L; 2nd owner, 143K miles, runs a hell of a lot better than it looks, and manages 50 MPG highway! Carbureted 1.3L 4-banger, 5-speed manual (originally 4-speed but the current owner swapped it for a 5-speed from a newer Festiva), manual steering, manual brakes (front disc though), AM/FM radio with not even a tape deck, no A/C...



And what could that be on the back of this underappreciated eco-turd...?!?!

 

Why it's a trailer (A kit purchased from Harbor Freight)!

 

Which the owner uses to tow his RARE 1949 Indian scooter to events, like the cruise night where I found this unlikely grouping of vehicles!

 

Oh, and the owner says it gets 40 MPG while pulling the trailer!

 

This makes me feel a hell of a lot better about how messy the interior of my truck can get!

 

So...

 

Kinda has a "Zombie Outbreak Response Vehicle" vibe to it...

 

I believe he said these were 12" wheels...? He said that tires are relatively hard to find...

 

1.3L 4-cylinder engine; Carbureted and makes less than half the horsepower of my truck!

 

Seriously, I could see Joel and Ellie requisitioning this exact car in the first The Last of Us game...

 

Anybody who's familiar The Last of Us knows that Joel and Ellie swiped a GMC pickup from the garage of a house in the fictional town of Lincoln, Massachusetts and made it to Pittsburgh before the truck was totaled in an ambush involving a large city bus. After they leave Pittsburgh, it is never shown how they made it all the way to Joel's brother Tommy's settlement in Wyoming so quickly; I was bored one day so I actually mapped out how long it would take to walk from Western Pennsylvania to Wyoming. The game begins in the late summer of 2033, and even though no specific date is given one can assume that it was late August or early September; They did not acquire a horse until the fall of 2033, and if they were to walk the entire distance from Pittsburgh to Jackson on foot, it would have taken well into December! By the time they reach Wyoming, it is shown to be fall, but not late fall; The in-game scenery gives you the impression that it's mid-October but no later than early November. My theory is that they managed to find an operational vehicle (or multiple operational vehicles), and thus were able to drive at least part of the way.

 

I worked with a guy that was a cheapskate, he had a white one.

 

Hey, 50 MPG? If I could find a decent one with a manual transmission and A/C, I'd buy it before I bought a Prius!

 

Yeah his was a MT with AC, drove it for many years.

 

Oh, and what could that possibly be next to the Festiva?!?!

Why, it's a 1986 Honda Helix scooter!
