There are some apps out there you can use as shot timers if you just want to play around with one before figuring out what you need/want.

ive used IPSC Shot Timer (on the play store)

I got to spend about 2 hours at the range teaching a couple of friends from Cali how to be safe with firearms and teaching the one how to shoot both handguns and long guns and the other how to be safe with handguns (she has some experience with long guns but none with handguns).

Started with a cleared handgun for basic operation, moved to the SIRT pistol for grip mechanics, sight alignment, and trigger/muzzle discipline and then finally graduated them to a suppressed bolt .22 rifle.

They both enjoyed the time, although Avi who had shot long guns before was having a difficult time with handguns compared to her sister. So I spent about 30 minutes working on Grip, stance, and dry fire with her, she had a terrible flinch downward and didn’t couldn’t see it with an iron sight pistol but immediately saw it in dry fire with the red dot equipped pistol, after a few minutes of dry fire I made the gun hot and she started making hits. Now she wants to buy a SIRT pistol when she goes back to Cali so she can dry fire.

The sirt pistols are great for keeping in training while ammo costs are stupid.

Absolutely, my skills would’ve degraded much more than they have if I didn’t have my SIRT bolt and SIRT pistol. Avi is waiting for her first firearm to come in off of back order (Benelli super nova) and she’s not old enough to purchase a handgun so the SIRT pistol will be a great training tool for her. I just wish that I had access to a Glock modeled SIRT to see if she prefers the M&P or the Glock as I’ll probably end up buying it for her.

    Hey,

I would like to know your general thoughts on the Springfield XD9.

I really liked all the safety features as a first gun. The Glocks are a little pricey in CA right now.

    Thanks!

Go to a range that rents guns, and that one specifically. Shoot a few in the same class / size, etc, buy the one you shoot the best, and feels best in your hand

First of all, get your thinking right. YOUR focus on safe ownership and handling matters far more than any feature on the firearm. Do not let a feature list misguide you about where to keep your focus. The myth of firearm dysfunction and 'just went off' is exactly that - a myth being used to hide embarrassing negligent discharges.

The XD line is a fine set of pistols. Some of t he newer models are tacky and childish in decor (GRIP ZONE!!1) but mechanically no different than older models that aren't bro'd out (some of their recent releases seem to be moving away from this aesthetic as well, thank God). I carry an XDM 3.8 compact in 9mm myself.

Before making a decision though, you need to try a lot of things. Pistols, revolvers, lots of models, lots of calibers. Ergonomically can you handle and operate all the functions easily? Are you able to shoot the weapon accurately? Will its size and shape allow carry in the fashion you desire?

Even the right gun in the wrong caliber is a poor decision. I do not shoot .40 well out of *anything* - the cartridge and I just don't get along. If you ever have to use your personal rescue device, you are legally responsible for every round that goes down range. You want your rounds to go exactly where intended and it is definitely worth the time to find the tool that facilitates that well.

Thats the first half. The second half is regular training. Our bodies develop high levels of competence in skills we practice often. Regularly exercising on your everyday carry is important and will do more than your selection of model to produce a high level of efficacy using that gun.

Oops, forgot I needed to add in my experience and a disclaimer that I've been around guns for quite some time, but never purchased my own. The first bullet through it will be in a safety training course, I'll be spending my weekends at the range with buddies who are all trainers, etc. Yes, all that stuff is there and I'm on the best track possible to doing it right.

I have shot a 9mm 10+ times, .45 a few times, .357 a few times, etc. and feel comfortable with the 9mm. I feel very comfortable and am very accurate with a Glock 17. The Glock 19 I have never shot, but held today and felt again, very comfortable.

I will take @JimboAnz advice and go rent the 19 and XD9 out with a buddy who is an instructor. Thanks!

    Practice, practice, practice.

I shoot a Glock 22 in 40 (used to do the 229DAK in 40 for work), so most of my gear is in 40. My compact is a M&P Shield 2.0 in 40. Dry fire. Laser practice, not just in a static situation, but also with movement, an in different levels of stress. Practice draws and 'defending the pistol'.

Always be safe - the first safety feature is your brain. Second - a good holster. Third - a good drop safety. I don't like safety selectors, if it's left my holster and I have a round chambered, I'm ready to shoot or not shoot. So it's your brain that matters the most. If your index finger has a natural 'curl' on a draw, FIX IT - the gun isn't the thing that's going to fix it for you. Practice holstering a loaded weapon.

As for particular firearms? Pretty all the mid tier and higher pistols are perfectly fine weapons. For a nub I'd suggest something in 9mm, modern high expansion 9 is perfectly fine for all purposes. (Except availability, these days).

If you have any specific questions about the XD line I'd be happy to PM it out. Been carrying one since 2013.

Ruger makes some nice revolvers. I’ve only got one ... but it’s been a good one.
