Sorry for the dumb question, but if you get this tune, you can still flash it back to factory right? And if you do go back to factory and take it in for some work at the dealership will they be able to see that?

The tune identifies as the stock factory tune. It is not detected by the dealership.
But yes it can be flashed back to stock.

Maybe find someone in New York that has the Vftuner software and contact them, see if they will flash your truck for a fee. Then buy my tune files for them to use.

Thanks @PapaRee for stepping in to answer questions.
In the end guys, if you buy a KDMax tune and decide a few weeks later you chose wrong tip in style or decide to get gears, etc, I will definitely work with you on updating or changing your tune file. We’ll just have to work out the details.
Definitely won’t leave you with a tune you’re not happy with.

Contingent on number of trucks that sign up but hopefully early/mid may and almost definitely on a Saturday, possibly Sunday.

Once truck threshold is reached, a concrete date, time, and location will be sent ASAP to all who signed up. Then hopefully give everyone 1ish - 2ish weeks to make arrangements.

So dumb question, this is a custom tune not OVTune?

Not a dumb question, quite legitimate! I will elaborate.

It is not an OVTune. OVTune provided the software and base tunes and basically told the people who got the software to create and edit their own tunes, share tunes, tune as many trucks as you like with the same ECU ID, (4 credits to unlock an ECU ID) collaborate with other people who have the software and, again, to share tunes.

(It is my opinion that the reason OVTune has recently changed the way they license their software, tune packs, and price credits is largely due to the success of specifically the KDMax tune).

Anyway, that's how the KDMax was born - one guy made a tune based on the loose collaboration and information-sharing of a small network of TW members who got the tuning bug, he then shared it with 40 or so guys, asking for beer money donations, and those 40 guys installed it, ran it, provided feedback and diagnostics over the course of 3-4 months and collectively tens of thousands of miles, and that, with his and others' own extensive testing and personal education on tuning, tune parameters, tune field relationships, synergies, etc, eventually led to this custom tune known as KDMax 6.0.

When all the guys who donated to test the tune started reporting serious success and a collective, "holy shit my truck runs good on this tune," is when the tune creator and another guy started K&D Tuning and took the tune installation process to another level of national availability for all Tacoma owners without them having to buy the initial $400 software. This offers the fruits of their success and testing efforts to other Tacoma driver's so that everyone can actually enjoy driving their trucks again, and of course to make a little profit on the side. Good old USA capitalism!

In the end, most people just want to tune once and be done with it. Most people do not want to create and edit tunes with the vFTune software. But if you want a tune, any tune, OVTune or KDMax, you have to buy the software to install the tune or find someone with the software (K&D Tuning) to install it for you. Cheaper and much easier to have it installed for you

If you truly are into tuning and want to learn how to create and edit tunes, then yeah buy the software and go for it! It is pretty cool stuff - OVTune did create a really cool piece of software.

Kind of confused about this whole tuning thing. I’m assuming I would have to have the vftuner software/flasher to get the kdmax tune put on then from there I can flash it onto the ecu. Please let me know if I’m correct or not. Also if I would need the vftuner, would anyone mind posting a link for which bundle I would need. By the way, would definitely be interested in the Houston meetup!

To get this tune on your truck, all you need is your truck, and an installer (me). And the means to pay for the tune :D
No need for any software or further maintenance

i am assuming dealers would be able to detect the tune? is it recommended to revert back to the original tune before any warranty work?

Dealers cannot detect the tune. The ECU ID remains the same. That said, and for full disclosure and honesty, if you were to tell the dealer that you had your ECU tuned, it could very likely void a warranty. The jury is still out on that one but as I said, we cannot guarantee it will not void a warranty. Neither can OVTune for that matter!

I can say that a dealer could do major work on the vast majority of your Tacoma, inside and out, electric and mechanical, and never once detect a different tune on your ECU unless they specifically searched for it.

I had an OVTune on my truck when it was just a lease (I planned on buying the truck after the lease - long story) and had it in to the dealer for an ECU TSB before we could do those things ourselves. I was on OVTune for 04B03 (OVTune v1.04) and the dealer updated me to 04B04 and didn't have a clue I had a tune on the vehicle and they did DIRECT work on my ECU.
I then immediately went and installed OVTune v1.04r which was the correct tune for ECU ID 04B04.

So, I know from personal experience that they cannot detect the tune.

Sorry if this sounds confusing to you - ask if you want clarification

Excellent! I will put you on the list and make sure to notify you (and all those who signed up) as soon as humanly possible once a date, time, and location is set.

There will likely be a solid 2 weeks from notification to actual event day, if not more.
