Dude, where’s my front bed rail?

I joined the 3rd gen club last week and noticed there’s no front bed rail. What gives? Is this just my truck or did the PO remove it?

 

Front rail doesn't come on the 3rd gens but you can order the 2nd Gen one and the bolt holes line right up.

Well lucky for me I happen to have a 2nd gen laying around.

 

It’s funny some of the things Toyota removed on the 2016.

Bedrail
Pass floormat clips
Drivers map pocket
Sunglasses holder in the OR
Fuse Cubby

Not to complain I’ll take the myriad of other added features over these but still “c’mon man!” (Said like Biden)

If only it was level with the sides.

When you do install the front accessory rail, on the bottom of the header rail is a bit of foam tape. Pull that off and use silicone instead helps level them out just a bit. While your there, seal up both front corners with silicone also if you're gonna cap or soft topper it.

 

That was deleted in 2019.

It was said that the wheel well cubbies were used by the factory tooling. Once they updated the tools, the cubbies were deleted as they no longer served a purpose for Toyota.

 

Fuse cubby, right knee cubby, door cubbies smaller, no above wheel well cubbies, driver's side rear bed cubby gone. I guess this is the area they chose to sacrifice for costs...storage. I don't know how I ever managed to plug in my cellphone to charge it in my old truck....thank goodness there is a wireless charger taking up yet another space that was formerly storage. I had far more in my 06 acess cab than do I in my 21 dubcab. Go figure.

 

Dont forget the driver's side Oh Shit handle. I miss mine from my 06.

 

Damn it tony you always have good suggestions. I noticed this when I put my
tonneau on but didn’t know how to fix the problem. Now when it rains there’s minimal rain that gets under the tonneau, but I bet it could be even less if I had that gap fixed easily.

Anyone else with this problem/fix?

There are some rubber endcaps for the header rail that have been posted here. I believe they are for the Toyota tri-fold installation? But even with those, you still need to add some goop.

Sorry that I don't have a better pic, but this is the right corner from the day after the Softopper install. I picked that booger off later:

Also, painted the mount rails and fittings matte black!

I also sealed under the bed rails. There was a bit of paint wear in the contact areas from jumping over the side and in the back corners from the rails rubbing. I touched those spots up before putting the HD foil tape down.

 

I got the kit on preorder. I will have my grab handle again.
