The way it was explained to me from a university professor is due to the location the blood vessels connect to the gills on trout. Easily damaged when the head and jaw are craned back that way. May not be immediately noticeable but the damage can kill them slowly.

I suppose if you’re killing them it doesn’t really matter but it’s a bad habit a lot of guys bring to trout from bass fishing.

Lol for a bunch of people who get their jollies by shredding innocent fish faces and calling it good sport we sure are concerned about somebody giving a trout a neck ache :boink:

    It's complicated.
Growing up I was taught to NEVER lip-lock a large mouth bass when using a treble hook! I forgot that lesson ONE time. OUCH!

Just stumbled across this awesome thread.

Just tying up some elk hair caddis for a trip down to the driftless area of MN next weekend. Probably tied way more than I need, but I was on a roll.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
There's a cicada hatch this year. It should las from June into to July I think. I'm going to try my hand at tying one of those.

I’ve heard the real fun during the cicada hatch is catching carp on top. I missed out during the last emergence here :(

east side of USA sounds like a while different experience than what I’m use to here in Idaho and Oregon

Lol definitely some glaring differences but overall it’s the same game. A yellow stimulator works as well in Montana as it does in WV :)

I will say I miss bouncing down the big western rivers in a raft slapping the bank with junk. Here in the SE all the floatable freestone rivers are too warm for trout.

On the other hand, smallmouth are pretty badass

indeed! I do love throwing big foam bugs to bank bows from my pontoon boat. However, when you can fish a river that has trout and steelhead (like the Deschutes below) it makes for a fun mystery fishing during certain times of the year

100% agreed and those Deschutes fish are awesome on a stout 5 weight. Such a gas.

I had the good fortune to fish the Deschutes last fall with a college buddy that lives in Bend. The fishing was slow that particular day but I did manage to catch a small redband and a huge buzz lol.
I’m gonna get back out there sometime when the B runs are in :)
