No doubt there’s an Opiate problem in this state but you won’t see it much in the mountain counties. Down south it’s really bad... home prices will also be all over the map depending on where you want. We’re in the Morgantown area market and it’s absolutely crazy like the rest of the country. I travel extensively for work and have lived in the Rocky Mountain West, Southwest, and deep South. My parents live an hour from Jackson Hole, I’d probably trade here for there but since work is based on the east coast this is it.

...^^^... Been to very state and each has good points ... with that said ... Georgia and Florida and Texas are my favorites.

I have been to 65 different countries and lived in US, Thailand, Canada, Finland, France and Germany and now I want warmer weather.

House prices are better in GA, FL & TX than in OR too (depending on the city).

Do some --- City-Data google searches and read those blogs ---> https://www.city-data.com/forum/

... ^^^ ... Great info here on each state and do the blogs with other people and their moving experiences.

I'd stay away from Maine. Winter's have snow and ice, ( skis, snowmobiles, iceboats, skates), spring has mud if you are rural. Summer's are cool and the water in the many lakes and ocean stays cold. Rumor has it that there is fishing to be done, stripers, trout and such. There is a little boating, sailing, canoeing, kayaking to be had either fresh or salt. And the lakes and coast are lousy with islands. Not much in the way of beaches. Fall, a few trees turn color, and there are deer and moose in the woods. Maine just took over the number of microbreweries in a state. Oh, and Tacos are seen as small work trucks, as likely to be carrying ladders and lumber, be rigged for snowplowing, as they are rigged for adventure.

Georgia is overwhelmed right now and there are houses that have been under contract for over two years and have not broken ground yet.

I didn't mention the ticks, mosquitos and the black flies. Season is here! And we have seen people moving up from away. Real estate market is hot and high but not by more urbanized standards. If you want superfast internet, stick to the cities of which we have maybe two or three by the standards of the folks to the south and west.

If you're an outdoorsman you should look at Michigan. My county alone has over 110 inland lakes plus we border 4 of the Great Lakes. We have salmon in the 40lb range. Large whitetail deer. The best walleye fishing in the world. We have such a wide variety of terrain from sandy beaches to the Porcupine Mountains. As an avid hunter and fisherman I like that it's one of the safest states as far as dangerous wildlife. We have no poisonous snakes to speak of (our Massasauga Rattlesnake is rare, small, and almost harmless). We have black bears in northern areas but they avoid people. We only have wolves in the Upper Peninsula. The Great Lakes are so large that they have tides but you won't find anything to be afraid of swimming in them except maybe a giant sturgeon or a 6' muskie.

I live near Knoxville and love it too. Only problem is $200,000 houses are selling for $250,000. My neighbor just sold their house valued at $457,000 for $550,000.

I’d highly recommend East Tennessee, specifically Knoxville or more eastward towards Johnson City. Weather doesn’t get below 25f (very little snow) much during the winter and not much over 90f in the summer. Tax wise it’s cheap too. You can still find reasonably priced houses, but the house market is messed up right now a good bit. Plenty of out door activity areas too.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Maryland. Bay, ocean, mountains, cities, in between northern and southern states. And not to mention, the blue crabs!

I don't think so, Texan natives are pretty easy to spot, given that "I'm from Texas" is included in every. single. sentence. they. ever. say.

Starbucks employee: "Good morning, welcome to Starbucks, what can I get started for you?"

Texan: "Well, I'm from Texas, so I'll have a coffee."

Doctor: "What brings you in today"

Texan: Well, I'm from Texas, but I'm worried about my blood pressure."

As far as staying the fuck out, don't worry, bud, you won't ever see me there.

Trust me I feel the same way about people moving to Oregon. Due to so many CA residents moving north our home prices have basically doubled in the last 4 years, it's absolutely insane. No I don't want to buy a $300k trailer on no land, cash only....ridiculous. It really wasn't that long ago where a 1,500sqft home in Medford was $225k and in decent, livable condition, maybe 2 years ago. Now? Literal trash for 300k+. Hence moving across the country. That and wanderlust is a thing. Haven't been east of CO since I was 13. Beyond excited for the trip and exploring the rest of the country!

the "Texas is full" thing is a joke on some of the other forums I frequent, so I assumed it would be the case here too. And you've hit the nail on the head on why. Come on in to visit, but when it comes to why it's nice to live here, we don't need any "improvements", politically or otherwise
