One fish if love to catch. Maybe someday. What kind of flies do you use - streamers?

Crooked River in Oregon. Took the kids out to fish a little and the Crooked is the most manageable river around for the youngsters. Not the biggest fish, but lots of smaller red sides and whitefish to have fun with. I fish a 3wt there and it’s a blast!

You willing to give up any tips on walk-in access and good wading spots on the Spring? I was thinking of checking it out at some point in the next month or so.

    Doesn’t hurt to ask.....

If it weren’t for the kindness of strangers I would have never connected with skagit native chrome during the short time I lived in Bellingham. Big thanks to @boxcar from Washington fly fishing forum :)

I would hope if @CreekCrawler decides to share he would do it in the private messages tho.....

Most rivers in the NW, yes. Mostly for chinook although places like the Rogue you can bonk native steel (please don’t do that).

Always fun to pull a chunky fish out of those small streams.

It’s been this way since before I was born. Upper reaches are different although the Columbia close to the Idaho border still allows retention of native chinook. This is a blanket statement for the northern coastal rivers, but the central and southern coastal rivers are very similar:

    6E1CA78E-4B69-4F63-AAE2-D392A3EA84C4.jpg

There is also a native coho and steelhead aggregate bag limit up and down the coast (less so for steelhead unless it’s a river where steelhead are not native — like the Mckenzie). Thousands of native chinook are retained at Buoy 10 and the bays each fall...

wow. I always let the natives go. Maybe I didn’t much attention because I chased steelhead 90% of the time and that was always fin clipped only where I lived

These are unclipped hatchery fish for sport catch. Due to fk up management of over raising chum for profit and choking natives out from food supply

A lot of people always goes back to the fact that because you are basically assaulting the fish with a hook it’s ok to mishandle them or at the least not be too concerned with good handling practices after you land them. I’ve heard the word “hypocrite” thrown around. but that’s not a good argument IMHO.

That would be true if you were concerned for the fish’s welfare just for the sake of the fish’s welfare. First and foremost - at least for me anyway and I suspect most other people - it has nothing to do with being kind to the fish. It’s about doing the least harm to it so it can live on to be caught again and/or spawn so it can make more fish to be caught in the future. That’s it.

If was concerned about the fish I sure as hell wouldn’t be putting a hook through it’s mouth and dragging it out of the water after exhausting it half to death. It’s a fugging fish not a puppy. . .

Edited to add: that’s not to say it’s ok to cause unnecessary suffering to them either, but let’s face it, that’s what we’re doing when we fish isn’t it? I still try to do as little harm as possible.
