    Agreed.

A local glass company wanted to add a new production line so we had to go survey their electrical panels to see what they had available. In wandering around the building, I quickly concluded there's no way I could work on an assembly line like that. :puke:

Granted, my wife thinks what I do would be boring and I think what she does is gross, so to each their own.

Metal isn’t all that different in the fact that the alloys can become very specific. And depending on what you are building and if it is going to be post processed to be hardened or anodized, etc the choice of the material is very important.
They do anneal metal, which is a sort of tempering when they produce the sheet or bar. And there are specific ways that the annealing process can be performed to produce different tensile properties. Some are air conditions, some are in oil. Once we encountered 5052-H32 aluminum sheet that cracked when we bent it, we had been bending the same parts from this same alloy for over 15 years, when we approached our material supplier about it, they said we were using the wrong tooling. I found that hard to believe for the reason I just stated about the history of these parts. So we requested the material certifications and were told this material came from one of the US based mills that had recently opened back up due to tariffs etc. so we compared it on the molecular make up level and it matched exactly, but the one difference was the annealing process one was a delayed process and the other was as it was leaving the rollers. This made the difference.
I used the reference to my GM that it’s like baking a cake with all of the same ingredients in the same quantities, but baking one at 350 degrees and the other 700 degrees.
And I’m pretty sure the glass world isn’t too far off from that example!

Thanks for the read Tracy. Sure goes to show that old ideas can have new applications as the advancement of the needs in the world around it catches up!

yeah repetitive works sucks. But that is pretty much all we do. Sometimes it’s a one or two piece but other times it’s a lot. We just got done running a lathe job of about 5800 pieces. Each part took about 1:10 with flipping it end to end. Couldn’t walk away from that one. What’s worse on this job is a I have to check each part as it come out. Have a .0005 tolerance on them.

I don’t even know how many we caught, maybe a dozen. The last picture of him holding that bass was the last fish he caught and we left. We had a blast!

Neat setup, I know it took a little time and programming but it’s worth it when doing multiple parts

Got a contract to do a mess of 4” pipe welding test blanks. Had to be cut to length then beveled. Had 4 maybe 5 band saws goin’ for a month ‘n a half. Still can hear that “Clink” in my Nightmares.

The pond we went to is a friend of ours, one of our customers and his dad showed up at the same time we did. It’s a small pond. They got out and sat two chairs down and didn’t move. They left when we did. They didn’t catch a fish. Cole and I worked half the pond to catch what we did. You’d think they would have gotten up but nope.

When I was 13 I caught a Northern Pike from the boat and tried to catch some Croppies from the dock but ended up with the hook embedded just under my eye instead. My uncle cut the barbed tip off the hook and I called it a day. Must still be traumatized because I've never even considered trying it again.

actually wasn’t bad on the setup and programming. Already had it programmed for 1 so just had to change when I posted it to the machine from a single part to 4 parts. A few minutes with the probe to set 4 work shifts and I was in business. Got about 90 runs done today after setup.

No, you're right, there are a lot of similarities. That example is crazy, I can't imagine tracking down an issue like that all the way back at the material production. Your description of the aluminum being annealed as it comes off the rollers reminds me of something we do called "flame annealing" which is really just a way to avoid having to run something up in an oven which takes overnight usually. What we do is while a part is spinning, gradually move heat across it evenly and as long as you don't stop before you've evenly heated the entire part, it'll be free of strain.

We can check for strain in a polaroscope since glass is usually clear, is there a way to check metal for strain before it breaks due to it?
