Vibrations Issue with Third Generation Tacoma truck

Mine had the same issue.
It is a TSB for deceleration vibes.
They ended up replacing both leaf packs, added a steering damper, and adjusted the angle of the diff with some shims under the leaf springs.
I dont have any more vibrations.

Yes, dealer did the TSB on my truck and got rid of about 95% of the vibe.

 

Dealer did TSB last week. After driving, I'd say 75% (I'm being conservative) or more of vibration felt in body/frame is gone. 100% gone in steering wheel.
They added steering wheel damper and off-road leaf springs per TSB.
Feels like a different truck, sorta. No more cursing Toyota when I decelerate.
Note: You have to talk to techs in main shop. Front line service folks will say it is normal or they don't feel it.
Once I got to the right guy, he went for test drive with me and felt it immediately. Service was great from then on.

 

I agree 100% with everything you said.....exactly what happened to me. I'm glad that the fix has met with your satisfaction. My problem now, with my Limited, is that I feel every little bump and crack in the road in my seat, floor and steering wheel. My truck is a 4x4 double cab but not a TRD Package. Therefore, it doesn't have the Bilstein shocks. I'm thinking of changing out the shocks to better dampen the road issues.

 

I did not notice the ride feeling very different regarding bumps in road. I have stock SR5, if that matters (now with offroad leafs). I am going to go do the TSB angle measurements (with iphone level app)
with bed empty and 1/2 full gas tank as dealer saw it...then load on the tonneau cover, bed mat and minor gear and see if angle changes. I expect minor remaining vibration to further decrease (if at all) since dealer measured joint angle is on + side of center of spec range after leaf replacement.
This is fun now that it is taken care of.
I think a carrier bearing drop spacer would be overkill, and may push angle out of spec since I did not lift, but I'll scratch my head about it later. $18 to try. Probably won't.
Lots of value keeping it stock for drivetrain warranty. If any problems down the road, I won't have to explain away any mods to drivetrain to dealer (and I don't really need any for my use).
ps. I did not mean to imply changing shocks modified drivetrain...it does not..i'm just ruminating on my fixed toy.

 

Imo, really don't know how big a difference just changing shock brands will work. Hitachi shocks in general have a pretty good track record. These trucks with the hitachi shocks seem to get better after several thousand miles, or at least the suspension springs being to settle in. I had a tundra with KYB's, and rode in a another similar one with the trd bilsteins...couldn't tell hardly any difference in ride. Imo, shocks are shocks, even if calibrated a bit different between brands with the exception of some like fox. You'd need a set of external clicker shocks if you want to make a radical change.

 

what are you comparing your truck to? what was your last vehicle?

 

My last vehicle was a 2007 Tundra SR5 with TRD OR Package. It had Bilsteins and the same size tires that are on my new Limited. You felt absolutely no road rash, bumps, etc. Maybe I'm asking too much since I'm comparing apples and oranges.

 

You raise a good point. I've only got 750 miles on the truck. I should probably put a couple of thousand on it and see if the suspension improves.

 

I think I have this issue. When I coast and brake, in neutral, to a stop, from like 25mph to 12mph, I feel slight vibration in the truck. I thought about taking it to the dealer as well

 

That's it Matt. Bring it to the dealer and have them perform the TSB mentioned earlier in this blog.

 

ok maybe try the shocks but the tundra rides alot better stock than the tacoma from my test drives. Its par for the course since the tacoma is 1200 lbs lighter

Set the tire pressure to the correct psi and give the truck's suspension at least 5k miles before doing anything.

 

The gen1 tundra i owned rode like a full size car, no comparison to these tacoma's and never will.

 

Will do. With only 750 miles on it, it's too soon to condemn the beast. I agree with your comment on the ride of the Tundra. My '07 Tundra actually gave a smoother and quieter ride than my wife's 2018 Lexus RX-350.

If toyota ever built another tundra similar to the gen 1, i'd buy one in a heartbeat. All these full size trucks are boats now.

 

Do you guys think this will be a long term problem if left unchecked? I've got 15k miles and don't think much about it anymore. Bothered me more when it was new. I recall having a Corolla with a stick (commuter) that had a "wobble" in 2nd gear when accelerating that the dealer just shrugged at. That same wobble was there after 200k...I'm guessing it's still there for whatever schmuck is driving it now. Seems like there's a low success rate with this TSB.
