    The modern automatic transmission is about the most expensive and fussy part of the vehicle to repair -- use the Genuine Toyota fluid.

    If the transmission requires GL-4, I HIGHLY recommend Ford Unicorn tears or Redline MTL. Both are extensively used in the Miata community where notchy shifts are often solved by using these fluids. Most Ford dealers keep the Unicorn Tears in stock. Makes a huge difference depending on whatever stuff the factory uses.

    GL-5 contains over twice as many additives as GL-4, mainly sulfur and phosphorus products. This is good in high-pressure applications (differentials), but sulfur and phosphorus react with bronze and copper. Your synchros just so happen to be made out of either copper or brass. GL-5 does not supersede GL-4, the GL rating is how much pressure can be sustained without any metal-to-metal contact between components.
