Yah for the price is go those the others are less known Chinese brands. The other options are Merlin solar but that’s big $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I’ve had great luck on regular renogy so the flexible is Miley what I’ll do. I may do 2 160 or 175’s but 2 100’s has been solid. Another guy I know uses commercial Velcro to hold them on. I’ll have to look into that but promising way to mount them. holds right even with rain.

 

So looks like your just running between the tailgate? I was hoping there was a a less exposed way.

 

Ahh selling the 3rd gen. Makes sense. ram rebel or a power wagon would be epic with an X1.

 

Ran in the 3rd Gen front bed gaps, filled with butyl tape. Seals up, isn’t permanent, out of sight.

RAM is on my list. I’m between a RAM and a Tundra at the moment. Won’t be nearly as much of a project truck as my Tacoma is haha

 

Hahaha that’s how it always starts. I’m curious to see what the new tundra is like. The features on the power wagon are too good.

I was going to get a 175W renogy at first, but you can only fit that plus one 100W panel on the top, based on dimensions. Two 175's or 160's won't fit based on the dimensions. Unless you can mount one above the cab.

 

ah yah I recall that on the 175. I thought the 160 would fit side by side as its slightly narrower than the 175. 2 100's works pretty well though figure why not boost it a bit more haha.

 

If you already have two 100s, you could just add one or two more.

I ordered VHB tape, should be here today. Didn't think velcro would work well, even commercial velcro.

 

Curious what you guys think about ditching the base plate.

The top of my cabinet frame will attach to rivnuts along the front and side of the bed. It also fits very snug length-wise with the tailgate up. There is no bottom to the cabinet - stuff inside will just be sitting on the floor of the bed, and it's quite wide at 21".

I had planned to bolt it down to the base plate as well. But when I test fit the cabinet at first the bed mat was still in, and I liked that better than when I tested with the base plate. Bed mat is more comfortable on the feet, more durable, plus it's a non-sliding surface.

Seems like the rivnuts alone should prevent movement. It's wide enough that it would probably be stable without any attachment given the bed mat would help prevent sliding. I'd end up putting down some sort of non-slip mat over the base plate anyways.

Thoughts?

 

If your using the rivnuts or bolt to the side you’ll be good. That’s how I set my last setup.

im looking into doing somthing similar, i think at first i plan to get a tacoma sb mat if i can find one used. Or custom cut one from a tractor supply company by me selling horse stall mats basically same thing. I been pondering how i can get a case or some kind of storage on the driver side and have it double as storage and a bench, but able too remove it when i don't want it.

 

Yeah that's another plus of only bolting in using the Rivnuts. Undo 5-6 nuts and I can pull the whole cabinet out to have an open bed. The cabinet itself is pretty light. Adding side wall panels to it will increase that a bit. The top panels will be removable.

 

I've bought and installed bunches of Renogy panels from Amazon (100w ones). ONE time I went with a cheaper brand thinking it would be the same. It wasn't. Some think Renogy is a cheap brand but their quality control is much better than some others. I don't remember the brand I got instead but it was not nearly as good. Rougher aluminum, cheaper electronics/wiring, etc. Renogy is still the go-to in my book.

 

I was meaning hanging down, like a 1' long black nylon loop strap would be perfect. I added handles to my Jeep Ursa Minor pop top and it worked great because it's a lot lower. I don't think any of us can reach the top of an SP, it's like 8' or more I think?

 

I’ve tested windy nation against Renogy flexible panels and the wattage output was spot on so it may be another product to consider. I’ve prepping for my setup and been building this with my son.

 

My only concern with flexible is longevity. I've heard a lot of flex panels drop in efficiency after 8-12 months. Anybody more qualified than me have any input on this?

 

When I did my test, it was a one year old windy nation that sat in the sun for the most part of the year. The Renogy was newly purchased and I didn’t see a degradation( maybe 1 watt output). Honestly by the time the flexible panel degrades, the price of them will hopefully go down by 50%. Solar panels keep on getting cheaper. Also dealing with a hard panels is a pain in the a$$. Here’s what I’ve been playing with the last two years. I honestly hate non flexible panels. It’s heavy and hard to deal with.

 

I've been thinking of just looping some 1" webbing around the external handle to pull it down when I get to camp. I've also noticed some dirt on my tan tent from grabbing it to close.

I've been running my benches on my bedmat now for two months. There's minimal flex and I just have everything bolted to the side rails. Zero issues with stability at all and it's comfy AF to stand in.
