Me too. My skids and sliders have been beat to shit. Though if you're getting into situations especially alone I'd snag a winch. Kicking around that idea in the future if I start going solo again a front bumper and a winch is happening

I can only imagine the things you must see! Personally, I'm thankful there is no safety inspection for personal vehicles (my commercial vehicle has to go through at least an annual inspection, sometimes more than that if I can't avoid the scales) but I can see how they would be needed, especially since most people seem to treat their cars as appliances.

stock weight for about any Tacoma is around 4400lbs... added 265/70/17 goodyear duratracs, and method MR305NV rims about 78lbs each corner...I added a set of sliders 170lbs... felt a little weight... added a front bumper with winch (added 80lbs) could feel it, but it helped the stock suspension nose diving/bouncy suspension effect... I installed dobinson MRA's with HEAVY RATE coils.. it stiffened up the front end a LOT. the rear got the 111 rear leafs from dobinson w/ MRA shocks... it flexes, and rides great, front is a bit stiff, but I had not added my skidplates yet... added CBI steel overlander skidplates (180 lbs)... definitly feel this weight.... my mileage dropped to nearly 15 this winter (believe we are still on winter mix gas, so fuel economy is gonna suck regardless.. also I was using the remote start in the winter so my mileage (average per tank) kinda sucks

in essence I added 750lbs of weight, plus the roling resistance of a large tire, effectively raising my gear ratio to around a 3.54 or so on a truck that likes higher revs, and now never sees 6th gear unless I am under 65mph, and on flat ground, or going downhill..

add on my Bed rack, and RTT, thats another 160lbs+ putting me above 910lbs of payload, on a truk that is rated for 1120lbs of payload... however technically you can subtract the 312lbs from the tires/wheels, and you are around 800lbs.. but I have'nt even added my fridge, camping gear, or fuel yet...

I am curious about the weight too- Not only does it have a full set of Mobtown steel plates, and steel plate covers on the LCA’s, fuel tank and differential, it has a front receiver hitch, And I also keep a plywood platform, full tool set, shovels, pull-pal anchor, a 8-ton Griphoist winch, 60ft cable reel with tackle, and full sized hi-lift jack mounted inside it- the thing is a pig but it gets us where we want to go in remote offroad places and back. I am not planning on adding more like steel bumpers and only occasionally bring a electric winch on a cradle mount. I do use e-rated tires on it as well, guess I needed that...

I added up my weight from aftermarket manufacturers specs and i was way off by at least 400lbs. I think youll be surprised when you actually weigh your truck

That’s exactly who I was thinking of! Those guys seem nice and to each their own but man, those guys WAY over pack for just 72 hours out in the woods.

I think what it comes down to is I just like simplicity and not having to manage a bunch of gear. I like nice chairs and nice food, other than that I’ll rough it.

No. Not going for just rock crawling and doing that flexbro thingy. Am still in good shape and can just walk past with my backpack and have. Good they enjoying themselves, but I would rather save the weight for other gear. Life is full of compromises like that. Thanks for your concern.

my problem is that even if you get the aluminum gear, you dont save a HUGE amount of weight over steel the added cost does'nt compute for minimal weight savings... as they have to make the aluminum part thicker ( & almost as heavy) to be as strong as the steel parts. also steel is easier to repair/weld.... you can go nuts with a hole saw, and shave some weight.. but I feel those holes are just going to hang you up, or cause more issues. my CBI skids are definitly beef, and I am confident I could jack my truck up from almost any point under the skids.

I had to weigh my taco as I bought it brand new in New Mexico, and drove it back home. Smogged it here too. Also had to have it “approved” by the dmv before I even attempted to register it. This woman just looked at it and asked me some questions, popped the hood. She told me Cali is ridiculous and she couldn’t wait to move to Vegas. I bought it in October and still haven’t gotten plates. But yes I had to weigh it

So, my truck is totally stock, and I have ordered a king 2.5 inch lift front suspension and rear add leaf with kings as well. I also have RCI complete skid system coming in steel. The only options on my truck are the toyota bed cover, and premium interior package with sunroof. I am sure all that adds another 40lbs over stock.

A friend once told me GVWR is what you make it to be, lol. He would overload his truck by half a ton regularly. He Didn't care.

In commercial trucks class4 and higher, GVWR equals GAWR. I think in our trucks GAWR is around 5900 lbs. The big question is why are lower classed trucks rated using gvwr. There is no straight answer and none of it makes sense. There is virtually no difference between an F250 and an F350, except spring rates. So theoretically if you increase the spring rates of an F250, you can increase the payload to that of an F350. But the gvwr nazis will come out of the woodwork and tell you that you cant.

It's your truck, do with it as you will, but most of those overland builds are well over gvwr. In fact in many cases, you can go over gvwr with just people. Does that mean you can only put a cake in the bed of the truck.

Then I read BS like this and laugh, because they basically just said GAWR:

    "Overloading
Be careful — overloading can cause dangerous braking and handling problems, and can damage your vehicle and its tires.

Gross axle and vehicle weight ratings
Secure loose items to prevent weight shifts that could affect the balance of your vehicle. When the truck camper is loaded, drive to a scale and weigh on the front and on the rear wheels separately to determine axle loads. Individual axle loads should not exceed either of the Gross Axle Weight Ratings (GAWR). The total of the axle loads should not exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). These ratings are given on the vehicle certification label which is located on the door latch post on the left side of the vehicle. (→P. 531) If weight ratings are exceeded, move or remove items to bring all weights below the ratings."

So in other words, when you weigh your truck, they want weight to be at or less than rated axle weight. But then they magically change the rating to some combined number that a lawyers decided was best, wallah we have gvwr.
