Overweight Tacoma

So true. You add weight and mpg drops. Just plain logic. If you don't overland why add a massive rack with all kinds of stuff. If you do don't complain about mileage.

Four guys my size is 1000 lbs with average height of 6'4". Taco overload.

 

Your tundra wouldn't be happy either. Lol

 

6450 with myself, the girlfriend, two large dogs, full fuel, 13 gal of water and 2 weeks worth of camping load out for all of us.

Dual Batts, Fridge, Sliders, Fireplace Ext...

No bumpers, skids or winch.

Any complaints about the fuel mileage being in the toilet???

 

I understand engineering and liability are all things the manufactures take into consideration. The vehicles capacity under most driving conditions are obviously taken into consideration also. Plus I’m sure there are some crazy safety or crash standards they have to meet as well. But just for fun I looked up my old 2000 XJ and it’s basically the same capacity as our trucks, there is no way! I definitely always drove around over loaded in it, and that thing also noticed everything. Hell, that POS (a POS I really enjoyed) would drive differently if it had a full or empty tank of fuel. I don’t recall ever overloading my truck by any means but even with my topper that’s got the reinforced roof package, plus crap in the bed and my 300 pound dual sport on a motocaddy has barely even made my truck drive much different. I know the “specs” of the truck are the specs and I’d never say go ahead and just ignore them, but man, I just find it really hard to believe about 1k is basically its designed limit.

 

Everything we design has a safety factor.
Elevators have a 12:1 safety factor.
Most of the stuff I have designed has 4:1 safety factor.
No clue what automotive safety factors are but they have one for sure.

 

And I bet it’s changed for sure. Back in the day they probably regulated it a lot less, now days I would assume the safety factor is pretty conservative.

 

On a side note some of our Aussie brothers in short cut off jeans and those wide brimmed hats must really have some over loaded rigs. The amount of armor and metal boxes they use are astounding.

 

Safety factors depend on the product, liability, Company directives.

Ahem, there are *5* seats in a stock taco.

So *5* guys could be going down to hooters, collectively 1250lbs. Hard to believe that filling each seat alone on a stock truck could take you over the designed weight.

Actually the opposite is true... because FEA and computers. We used to have a big ass safety factor on many things, now with more real world numbers it is possible to be much closer on real loads. FEA changed the design world.
Back in 1989, 4:1 SF was common. Now with accurate data, 4:1 is a way over designed.

 

I have a buddy who has a 2016 that hes had since new and it's set up like an aussie rig. He even has an portable 3 or 4 ton winch. We did many utah, nevada trips together when I still had my rubicon and his Taco did well. I just texted him to find out how much his rig weighs. Last time he weighed with full load of fuel, water, his GF, and his dogo, the truck weighed......6680. He said that when we where wheeling together 4 years ago, the truck was a bit lighter, since he did not need extra fuel or water. He said he was still at 6300 ish at the time. He also said he knew he was over the gawr and figured the engineers must have put a safety factor that covered a lot more weight, lol. he's at about 92k miles, so not high mileage, but a good portion of it is on long overland trips in the rockies and into canada.

 

Still need to figure out if we weigh the 5 guys before or after they go to Hooters. If they eat, there’s another safety factor right there.
