    Yes there is a spring or a couple that were helper springs in 3/4 & up trucks that were just ok but nothing compared to the hydraulic advantage.
    I had a Fl-60 a few years ago that was just murder on your leg if ya had to use the clutch often (floating the gears was best)

    I'm lazing too and like the auto, but, i am looking right now at a used manual tacoma. I'm afraid shifting gears will make me spill my beer.

    Years ago(60's) when all high performance cars had "heavy duty clutches" available as a option, some Mustang and Corvette clutches were real bears. Bigger pressure plates with heavy springs so that the everything would not slip when the power is applied. I guess you call those mechanical clutches.

    They definately put cramps in your leg in traffic. I realize that I am showing my age on this subject, of course clutches and materials have come a long way since then.

    OK. I have had some time to think about what I posted. Being hydrolic has no bearing on wheather the clutch peddle will be hard or soft. The determining factor on this is the springs in the clutch, and the leverage applied to said springs by the operating system. My 2 Triumph port bikes had non hydrolic clutches, and they were both smoother and lighter than my Duccati, which had a hydrolic clutch. Yes, a hydrolic clutch GENERALLY will be more smooth, but peddle effort is determined by the springs in the clutch, and how much leverage the operating sysstem provides to move the clutch against the springs.


    This has been bugging me. :)

    You basically just answered the question. The problem with mechanical clutches in PUs is getting the best leverage and it was finally determined by the big three to just go with a mastercylinder and slave cylinder ( just like Toyota) to get a better operating system.

    I hated the boring ho-hum drive from my auto '86 accord. My buddy's '82 manual toyota truck was a blast. Going off that, I went to the dealerships last year and wouldn't sit in anything but the manuals. I did the test drives a few times, and was a bit embarassed about how much I sucked. Finally drove an auto and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Didn't feel like driving was a chore, things were so much more enjoyable.

    Talked to my mechanic (he's worked for Toyota for a ton of years, does his own work from home as well) and he said it wasn't just me - mechs on these are having problems and aren't as easy to use.


    It's too bad, they broke my heart on that transmission. I still wish that '82 truck was around!

    manual love being in total control of the truck. unfortunatly no one sells a first gen with the v6 2wd prerunner with a stick so i had to go auto

    Manual! all the way Hate driving autos. Just more responsive on and off Road.

    And an answer to the guy with the clutch pedal question.
    It all has to do with the Pressure plate.... the stronger that plate the stiffer the pedal.

    EX. I have a stage 2 Pro clutch. its about 20-30% stiffer pedal than stock.

    My truck is my first vehicle, kinda handed down to me from my dad, and it is a stick. He taught me on that, and now that I've learned it I love manuals.

    Being a child of the 50-60's, manual trans were much more prevalent than today. Everyone who ever took driver's Ed. had to learn on a standard.... then had the choice to drive a auto or manual. Is a manual fun to drive all day in the city? Doubtful, but then any car in the city is the cause of the problem, not the solution.
    Naturally, trying to talk on the phone, drink coffee, thinking about texting, using your turn signals and being aware of your driving situations all detract from learning how to shift and use a clutch. Recently a young driver killed a pedestrian , while texting and he admitted that in court.....killing a person with a blackberry or phone.
    Sorry, for the editorial license.....driving is too important to be doing the above.

    Certainly the modern auto transmission is a great item and in some cases car manufacturers don't give you much choice either. Its auto or look for a different type of car. Given all that the auto trans are a complicated and costly thing, with all the computer controls, replacement costs are very high.....at least when you think of long term ownership. Good maintenance habits certainly will help, as trans fluid life is very important. Lets hope auto owners who religiously change there fluids will continue under their trucks/cars and service there trans too.

    All that being said modern auto trans are a smooth and efficient and can be a very good thing for those that like them.

    I hear ya ! Never have driven any of the auto Taco's , it seems everyone that I know enough to drive there truck , has a standard..... I would like to drive one and check it out.
    When I went looking to buy my truck, two years ago, I went to three places before I could find a 6spd, V6.....lots of auto's sold in Mass evidently.

    Manual or die! Manuals are more fun, has more hp and can get better gas mileage. Also you can do some good peel outs :burnrubber:
