when you did the regear. Did you check your methods and settings with ecgs to at least get their opinion on how you got it setup? Or are gears something you’re pretty confident with?

I’m gonna attempt it myself but gears are something I’ve never done so.. just investing in the right tools and doing my homework as best I can before I dig into it.

Don’t forget the torque converter at low speeds. Adds about 1.5:1 to 2:1

I just got quoted $4500 for 5.29 gears install and arb air locker in the front with compressor. Then they flipped on me and said they forgot labor on the rear diff and quoted me 5900 (11 hours labor on the front and 8 on the rear) seems like 11 hours is more like total labor no? $2400 on gears and compressor seams reasonable, 950 on air locker puts us at 3350, then 2200 for labor and 300 for taxes. I guess just the labor seems high.

    That is probably book time

Mitchell shows 9.8 hours for the front plus an alignment and an additional 9.8 for the rear.

Seems high imo. Paid $3,800 for parts and labor for 5.29’s with front ARB. However, I installed the air compressor myself.

It's a little high. A lot of shops charge about $800-$1000 an axle and you're also paying a premium for the parts. I think I got my gears on sale for about $1300 and the ARB Twin for around $400, but prices have been increasing. So its not outrageous but a little high. I havent regeared a Tacoma but I just completed a Dana 60 which took about 8-10 hours.

I got my Nitro 5.29s with REM polish ordered. This will be my first major mod, no armor, running 265/70/16s, I’m all stock. Might as well get this out of the way and add on the weights (sliders, full skid plates, bed rack, rtt, wheels, steel bumper) over time. Currently running the KDMax performance tune and it runs great but cant wait to see the difference/performance once I'm running this tune with 5.29s installed. I will have to contact ECGS on a quote for install and they are a 3hr drive away.

Call them sooner than later. They can get backed up for weeks to months for installs.

Will be doing that tomorrow. Not so much in a hurry since I’m grounded for now. Currently mobilized on orders in VA, I’m (my command) under covid restrictions as far as traveling and only can do so up to 50mi radius from base. If the cases can go down (which I hope so) then the radius opens up to 250mi including going out of state. So hope it gets better sooner than later. Thanks for heads up.

Good luck with that "performance" tune and 5.29s. Pretty horrible together.

Yeah i agree i’m interested to hear what’s so horrible about being tuned and geared? I’ve been tuned for over a year, and my gearing is getting done now. I don’t foresee any issues being that it’s a MT, so shifts won’t be effed

    Odd.
Tune and 4.88 in MT is basically a life saver, I mean reborn whole new truck experience.

Yes, the throttle is too aggressive to be driven with 5.29s in my opinion. It's like constant whiplash and 4 low becomes unusable in technical situations. Horrible.

Obviously not running the KD tune

    That's nice.

Same here, but I’m AT with 4:88’s and KDmax 6 reg tune....whole new truck experience for the better. Had the 4:88’s before KDmax and the tune made a huge difference for the better. Only thing I’m changing later is going to lighter tip in but that’s just personal preference. This tune works great with 4:88’s!

Good to hear your take on it, which tune did you go with? Extra light, light, or a regular throttle tune? I notice that the regular and even the light throttle can be too much pep for some guys. If you did not/have not tried the extra light throttle, at least give that a shot and see how that goes for you. And if that doesn't work the installer should be able to refine the tune to your liking.
