It doesn't take much. My DCSB is just about there with my RTT, passengers and supplies and gear to go for 7 or so days. Only added weight is a winch on a hidden mount, maxtrax and sound deadener. As I have noticed with towing, it seems like the drivetrain is up to it but the brakes...not so much.

I’ve been meaning to get my truck weighed, and this was a good reason to do it. This should help Radflo with valving and front spring rate for my ordered suspension as well. Also, making me think my Deaver U402 Stage II spring was a mistake, and I should’ve gone for Stage III.

    As weighed:
    Me + Fiancé = 300lbs
    ARE CX Topper
Drawers with regular stuff (tools, stove, recovery gear, etc)
    RCI Steel engine skid plate
    Falken AT3W 265/75r16 E load
Food and kitchen box that lives in the truck

5520 total weight, with a pretty good 53/47 weight balance.

RCI sliders and aluminum trans and transfer case skids are also on order. Add in 8 gallons of water, a ground tent, and everything else for 5+ days of camping, and I’ll be lucky to be under 6,000lbs driving down the road. If we bring a friend(s) along, maybe 6500lbs.

I can’t imagine the guys with steel bumpers, winch, RTT, swing outs, dual batteries, etc are anything less than 7,000lbs.

Good reason to stay on top of brake maintenance. Even my mild driving (I rarely drive over 65 even on the interstates, partly because I know this truck won’t stop quickly in an emergency, and I can still get 21mpg pretty regularly at this weight with E load tires), I fall well into the severe category for maintenance. 15K diff fluid changes, 5K OCI, etc.

I was certain that I’d be 200-300 lbs lighter than this. Well worth the $12.50.

    Yeah! Wait...I don’t...I don’t know anyone that is 250lbs?

Also, this is why you get the 2wd V6 DCSB. You nerds are eating up 10% of your weight capacity with the extra crap slaved to that 4wd knob you only use when you screw up adjusting the climate.

Yes and no, look at the payload of a Hilux vs a Taco and they get way more allowance. You can also upgrade your GVWR (which they call GVM) legally in Australia and there are standard kits that shops will do and sign off on for you. Wish we could do that in Canada but afaik there's no way.

Ronny Dahl has a good video on the subject: https://youtu.be/2Cfs0c7SmGM?t=1256

I’ll have to watch that when I get time later. But just pulling a number from my you know what, I don’t see why you can’t have 600-800 pounds worth of passengers plus another 1,200 in the bed. One time I went shooting with a few big dudes plus our gear, I had to of had at least a total of 1,500 pounds and the truck was totally fine.

I’ll admit, I haven’t looked too hard, but I can’t seem to find a comprehensive parts list for GVM upgrades. From what I can tell, it’s as little as replacing springs and shocks. No upgrade to brakes, cooling system, or other systems that are being stressed. It seems like they can upgrade the GVM to the point of combined GAWRs.

Seeing the Hilux with a 2200lb pay load capacity does make me a bit jealous.

Side note, one thing people seem to forget is the DCLB configuration does not exist in Australia. They pay huge money to stretch their 79 series 300mm (12”), to get what we can get from the factory for $1,000. Give and take.

If I had a 2wd I wouldn't need full skids and sliders. Thats more than 10% weight savings.

nothing bad is goin to happen UNless gaining BiG air over a jump

    crashing the suspension !!

my SR at 4000lb runs well compared to an overweight 4x4 dealing with more than 50% extra weight

the extra weight OFFSETS the extra HP to be a realistic factor

tho seldom mentioned on this site

‘ brakes ‘ & the inherent extended stopping distances are a concern/factor in the ratings

true certain components might fail under extended mileage ranges

some a couple trips for vacation to campgrounds

    others almost everyday

    wear/tear very different

Or you could be this guy, I saw that on a road test one time. It was raining and that trailer was full of rebar. I see all kinds of crap and no one ever gets stopped around here. People drive like that through the mountains (highway 17 in the Bay Area) and they’re the type of jerks that cause accidents for everyone. 76BB68C4-EEA4-44AF-BBF5-74156D788ED4.jpg
