Just wanted to thank everyone involved with this mod/fix. I just did mine and it worked! I did break one of the plastic tabs and knew I would, no biggie. It took me 3 tries and looks like ass but it works. Thanks guys and gals!

mine also stopped working a while back. this has nothing to do with a blown fuse? if not, then ima have to reread this post and take care of it accordingly.

Mine went out on my 2006 Tacoma found this post and performed the repair. Installed worked for 2 days then went out. The other resistor came loose. Took it back apart and repaired the other resistor... problem solved.
Might be warranted to go ahead and solder both resistors as stated in some previous post on this thread.

I found this string about the compass stopping the day mine went out in my 07. Thanks to these great directions, I took mine apart with no problems and what do I see....someone had already done this fix to it already! So, since I didn't have anything to lose, I re-soldered them again. Re-installed the compass, turned on the key, and WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!! Thanks to everyone's posts to this topic. Very, very helpful.

Chris, mine was the same way (had already been fixed at least once) when I bought my 2007. I tried to resolder it, but solder (sp?) wouldn't stick to the resistors anymore.

I talked to this guy: http://www.toyotatacomacompassrepair.com and he said that the metal contact ends of the resistors get oxidized from the heat / too much soldering and that is why he replaces both when he does the repair.

Your repair might last for a while, but I'll bet it quits working again. :( I recommend going to radio shack and buying new resistors and putting them on for a more permanent fix.

Anyone got pics of how those damn clips are supposed to look when properly installed. I did the fix on New Years but my console isn't held up tight by those clips any more. Frustrating things those damn little clips are.

Did the fix yesterday on a 2006 DC Tacoma Sport that was purchased recently and did not have the Temp/compass overhead working--it worked. Thank you for the information for this fix!!

For the guys who mentioned that they already tried to repair their compass / temp guage and it didn't work (or quit working), I went thru the same thing with mine. The solder won't stick to the old resistors anymore, you need new ones. This shop repaired mine: http://www.toyotatacomacompassrepair.com

I've been meaning to take mine apart and take a pic of how he did the repair. It looked nice and shiny and soldered a different way than the factory I think. Anyway there is a one year guarantee on it.

Either way, I think the trick is to use new parts otherwise it will quit working again.

Hi Guys, I'm was in the same taco boat as the rest of you on this overhead compass / temp issue. "GREAT BIG THANK YOU" to all of you who have had the same problem, found the fix and were decent enough to post it. It was such a simple fix, that even my GF could pull this off.

I suspect the whole problem is the lead free solder used now-a-days. Lead free solder is notorious for micro cracks due to expansion/contraction and with the location of these in the roof what better place to heat cycle these resistors. So, in my case I wicked all the lead free solder away then resolded using the leaded stuff... so far so good after nearly a year.
