So we are looking to replace the toy hauler, a 2003 GMC Yukon xl with the 8.1, with a diesel. We have a wakeboard boat and a double axle camper trailer and tow in high altitudes in the sierras, where this truck isnt cutting it. So its between dodge, chevy/gmc, and ford. The new ford/GM engines both use urea the ammonia/water mix. The dodge doesn't, and its looking more favorable because.

Sooo anybody want to explain the whole process, the injection, fill-up/range, cost, and the freezing point of 11 degrees Fahrenheit, along with their view of the current 2010/2011 engines on the market?

From what I hear you have to refill it every oil change and its like 70 bucks on top of the 90 oil change. I'm not sure how it works.

I've had 2 powerstrokes.A 2005 6.0 F350 and a 2008 6.4 F350.The 6.0 was junk. The 6.4 was ok but terrible on fuel.I sold them and bought a 2007 Ram 3500 dually with the 5.9 Cummins 6 speed. The Cummins outpulled the Fords and did alot better on fuel.If I was to buy a new diesel it would be a GM........Duramax/Allison for sure.Tons of power, good fuel mileage, and bulletproof powerplant.Just from my own experience owning and working on them.I saw the new 6.7 Scorpion but its too new to see how they will hold up but I know the new powerplants with Urea injection get much better fuel mileage and they probably have a inline heater just like they do for the fuel.

Try to find a '10 left over. The urea thingy is a '11 model year item. Our mechanic at work just bought a new service truck and purposely had the dealer FIND him a '10 just for that reason. I think they found it in Alabama and shipped it.

I completely disagree. The year they switched to the 6.7 they had alot of electrical problems but they fixed it in 09 and now it runs great.

I think you can't go wrong with any of the new diesels. We all have our opinions about different trucks but now days they all make very good engines and pull all about the same.
I would most likely buy a duramax because they are very reliable and have a great powertrain. After pulling a 6000+ load I can say that it didn't loose any speed over the hills, hell it didn't even strain at doing it.

personally I really liked the dodge, we didnt get to test drive it, they didnt have one at the dealers, but the interior was amazing oversized everything and luxuries like a 7 series, and the exterior was IMO the best looking out of the three. The numbers say the 6.7 I6 is less powerful but we are only towing less than 7k pound so it shouldn't make too much difference. The deal breaker was the urea on the two trucks, but i guess for 2010 they didnt have it so GM is still an option, but the ford isnt because they were only interested in the new 6.7.

^ The megacab in those trucks is so big. Its like having a couch and 6 feet of leg room. I agree that the dodge looks the best.

This ^^^ and to add, the 6.7 Cummins has been around for a Looong time, but used in larger trucks. The exhaust brake in the Dodge is the best out, and you can select individual gears (with the auto) useing the buttons (+/-) on the shifter. VERY smooth quiet engine. Thought the power rating is down from the Ford and Chevy offerings, there is PLENTY of power. We used my Moms Dodge 6.7 to tow our Toy hauler (11,500#), and when I toed into the throttle a little too aggressivly from a light, It spun the rear tires. It tows large trailors great! The truck has 30k miles on it now, and hasnt been to the dealer once. I was told from a friend of mine that the Cummins engines can be run at full load, under WOT for 100% duty, while the Ford and Chevy engines cant. Im not sure that means anything, but it seems impressive enough. Edit: A friend of mine just told me the Cummins will meet the 2014 emissions standars too.

i was thinking about the 7.2 or whatever it was that they came out with. Alot of guys i worked with on a pipe line crew had the dodge cummins and they always had problems with them. it seemed like every week somebody had a truck in the shop for engine work. we have had a 5.9 cummins for as long as i can remember and its never let us down a day.
