I just refuse to leave my bike on the carrier. I'll go out of my way to go home and drop it off or in a pinch I'll remove the wheels and throw the frame in the truck and wheels in the bed.

I see, not bad idea, and I would probably do for prolonged times away from vehicle. I guess this works for those red light bandits we hear about and gas station stops.
Maybe not so much for Walmart stops, etc...

I did watch a video and dude could not break the chain with bolt cutters unless he had like a 10' cheater bar or put the bolt cutters on some sort of vice.
It also took like 45 - 60 seconds to cut through with a blade grinder, I could get through it quicker with my portable band saw, but again super noticeable and noisy stuff.

You’ll be fine with those thicc chains. Back when I had my 2013 Giant Trance X, I would go to Chinatown in Boston to eat and leave it on the back of the carrier with just the included Thule frame locker cable attached. Never had issues despite being away for 1-2hrs at a time. But now I think my bike is worth too much to risk it at all.

The security thing is kinda a crap shoot anyway. Lock bike to aluminum rack, they cut the rack. Bike with expensive components, they cut the frame and get the parts. I actually grew up in that part of Berkeley and have friends who still live there. It’s mostly not that bad, and the extreme cases get the news, but if it’s you or your bike it’s not fun. And in my town, not too far from there, the homeless ordinance restricts the number of bikes allowed at a camp site. Chop shops are everywhere in plain view, though I think the cops are more diligent about enforcement if they see a Megatower vs a Huffy.

    not enough.
security isn't about prevention. it's about deterrence. unfortunately. The only completely perfect way to protect your bike is to...well...put it in concrete I suppose. I mean, putting it in your cab is secure until someone smashes your window. Putting it under a bedcap or a tonneau is secure..until they rip it or break the glasss to get it to it. But then again. it's all about deterrence. I tend to go overkill with my security. I got a wheel lock, a kryptonite chain lock, and a cable that locks up to my bed. It would take some time to brute force all three of them to be honest.

It's technically easier to break a window and steal the bike than it would be to cut this chain.

True. but then again, you could keep it out of sight of any quick lookers. and let the other guys who have their bikes on their racks on full display...get targetted. hah! Not that I would wish a stolen bike on anyone.

was it cam zink or carson storch that had their van broken into at some california hotel and had 3 of their bikes stolen? it was awhile ago when i saw the article on pinkbike, but it looked like they were peeling back sheet metal on the van to get the bikes out... borderline home invasion if you live in a van

edit. it was jeff lenosky, and it doesnt look like sheet metal was bent.

i think c4 inside the frame that can be detonated via cell would be nice in a bait bike to curb this nonsense.......or just paste up a bunch of huffy stickers on your high dollar rides.

The real solution is to tether yourself to your bike at all times.

Pretty crazy that MTB insurance for me runs around $3-400/year. My motorcycle insurance on a more expensive bike was cheaper. Makes sense if you consider how much easier bikes are to steal.

Yup - insurance rates are higher on cars that are stolen more often.

I don't do insurance - my bike was $500 used for my full squish, hard tail was less.

Alright, what's the weirdest thing yall have found while riding? I found a lost boat this weekend, called the state with the registration number and they said it had been reported stolen. They are going to call the owner and give him my number so hopefully it makes its way home. I had to pull the battery out of the 4th Gen and carry it a half mile though the wood to get it out of there since the one on the trolling motor was dead.

They should include the base Alloy Stumpjumper in this test. Maybe they don't because they did an entire review on the stumpjumper but the don't spend much time on the low end model. I picked mine up last week.
