I have about 215,000 miles been burning oil for a while. Had a head gasket leak replaced that and also replaced the pvc valve. I do a oil change every 3k and use oil stabilizer. I run mobile 1 high milage. From time to time a see some smoke out the exhaust when I really get on it. I'd like to get as much life out of the truck as I can. I bought it with 100k previous owner used as landscaping vehicle for a big company with routine check ups, and had all the paperwork for it. Thinking it's piston rings or valve seals. Any tips?

    Likely valve guide seals.

Best to run a leak down test to determine if rings.

I did change spark plugs like 10k ago 2 were clean and 2 had some white build up. Cleaned it all up and that fixed my misfire I was having. Does that tell you anything?

    Leak down test.

Plugs mostly indicate fuel lean or rich. By the time plugs show oil burn, you'll be driving a mosquito fogger.

    So is this a question?
Oil smoke noticed around 180-190k as far as the others I'm not sure what your asking.

It is not a question. More or less a reference to see when it is smoking, and thus the correlated parts.

Got it so ya acceleration. So the leak down test should help in confirming then.

@PhenixFord - Thanks for that link, I follow everything he says in that video but hearing it explained from a Toyota technician's viewpoint reinforces my beliefs.

I remember a co-worker telling me after reading a consumer reports article taken from NY city taxi drivers that extended oil changes are OK. My response to him was that I drive frequently on short trips in freezing weather and fall under the severe category in my owner's manual, so I need more frequent oil changes.

It'll be cheaper and easier to just keep topping off the oil

OP, years ago the head gaskets blew on my Subaru. About 170,000 mi.

I pulled the heads and took them to an old-time machine shop. I wanted a complete valve job including new valve stem seals. The machinist asked me if it used oil. It did not use any. He then warned me that if I did those things with the heads I wanted that it would probably start consuming oil. He was correct. It began using lots of oil.

Generally with the 2.7 2TR-FE, I have not seen a lot of people having issues with valve guides or valve seals. There are occasional issues with head gaskets reported here, these are usually brought on by overheating and/or very high mileage. But when these engines start burning oil, by what I have seen here on TW, usually it is the piston rings getting coked/stuck in the ring grooves on the pistons. Again just a general comment based on what I've read here on TW... YMMV. For a solution, some people remove the spark plugs and do piston soaks with various cleaning agents (Chemtool, etc.) or gradually clean things up by switching to synthetic oil and/or doing more frequent oil changes. Some people switch to a higher viscosity oil to reduce the amount of consumption. I hope this post is helpful.

I used to manage a Subaru specialty shop. We did plenty of headgaskets and not once did it ever cause the motor to consume oil after, no matter what we did for head work. That's not normal.

I have about 350k and thought I was burning oil, but it was the timing belt cover. Patched it, but it stopped sealing a year later, going through a quart every two months. I've always used Synthetics, either Mobil1 or Penzoil;. Will try Valvoline Restore and Protect
I tried high mileage oils at least six times without any change. I used AT205 (3x) and it's using a quart every six months. The schedule I change oil regardless of miles. I use a higher quality filter only once a year, but will do it every change with Restore and Protect.
Timing change cover is only wet. No drips to the bottom of the engine

Oil is always a current topic and it was close enough to what I wanted to post about. BI figured it's better that starting a new one and its what Google coughed up
