Thanks - yeah - I am looking for a riding mower, probably don't want to go over $4k. I have 1.25 acres of grass/low brush/dandelions to mow, slight incline, often wet, some obstacles - with a septic mound, which probably can't mow due to incline.

    Mower Suggestions?

I prefer to use a push mower over the septic. Don’t like the weight of a rider on top of the field. Maybe I’m crazy. It gives me a reason to fire up the old 2 stroke Lawn Boy mower though. Okay, definitely crazy!

We had a 2 stroke Lawn Boy growing up, dad worked on it as much as we mowed. Often looked like it was on fire with the exhaust underneath.

That’s odd. I find that they need very little maintenance. My newest is from probably right around 1980. And they all seem to start within 2 or 3 pulls. Better oils these days. Not so much smoke. I love the smell of 2 stroke exhaust wayyy too much!

We had a 70's Lawn Boy years ago, it would burble along through just about anything. I always used the genuine Lawn Boy oil in it. I had a dealer tell me "Lawn Boy went to a lot of trouble to develop an ashless oil, I don't care if you buy it from me or not, just use it". I did and it never missed a beat.

Stopped using it because the starter broke, pushed it in the corner of the garage for 20 years or so. Put it on Craigslist and a fellow drove 90 minutes one way to buy it so I guess it found a good home.

Kind of silly I guess, I always want things to go to a good home, even old lawnmowers.

I used the wrong oil in the first one I bought. Didn't know there was such a thing as air cooled two stroke engine oil. Just used the motorex stuff I use in the bike. Have to rebuild the motor now, which I'll do soon because it's my favorite of the 3 I have. A nice early 70's vintage Mag 19. I keep an eye on the classifieds and pick up everyone that's advertised under a hundred bucks. Girlfriend scans the ads for me too. She's a keeper!

Can’t argue Lawnboys were waaaay ahead of there time. Which other brand can fog bugs & cut grass at the same time. Pure Genius. :tinfoilhat:

we had one growing up, we had a “cottonwood” tree in the backyard, middle end of June the cotton would fly, drift up against everything. Inevitably got into the tank of the LawnBoy, and plugged main jet... that was a miserable few days, Dad being pissed because I wasn’t mowing the yard ( it wouldn’t run once it got into the tall grass). He finally tore into it and found the issue, and apologized to me. That thing had constant issues. It was older and had the open top fan with huge nut, it got the drill start often.
Yself, buying my first house, I bought one in 2000, WTF was I thinking ? It ran well for a few years then needed stuff, primer bulb, and constant water/condensation issues. Had carb issues, I wired the governor so it wouldn’t go wide open when the governor spring broke, spring was $1.37 shipping was....$12 NOPE ! Last time it ran it leaned out and seized, it’ll turn but I’m done. It’s been waiting for a scrap run.

I have an original Flymow from the late ‘70s early ‘80s hanging on the wall in my shed, I need to make it live again.....

I had one so old that it was yellow. Made by ''Lawn Boy Marine Division.'' 18'' cut, I think it finally died when it was 40 years old or so. Thing probably weighed less then 20 pounds. One of the best trimming mowers I ever had.

The biggest issue with 2 strokes is hard starting when compression starts to drop. It is far more critical with 2 strokes then 4 strokes.

Guy up the street from us had on old Techumsa 2stroke, no muffler (well, wasn’t much left of it anyway) used it to mow his side hill (25ft deep, 280ft long, at least 40° and chain link at the bottom. Let it roll to the fence haul it back up, 4 strokin as much as it was 2 strokin and LOUD ! 20+years of that.... and nobody ever really complained. (The good ole days... Karen’s hadn’t found themselves yet....)

I made bank with my Flymow, wearing Dads golf cleats I’d mow hills very similar to above at various places across town, swinging side to side walking up and down the hills. $25-$30 a crack just for the hill, and folks were glad to pay it. Had leg and back muscles those summers.....
