Own 2. Both are due for front brakes and rotors. Got 40k off original. Mountain driving has slightly warped rotors. Multiple options out there, any advice?

you can get new rotors and pads in kits off of tacomabeast or other websites, i just put new pads on mine at 65k and left the rotors since they were fine..

Solved my issue with warping rotors on my 2001 tundra changing over to slotted, and drilled EBC rotors with the stock ceramic pads. Truck was night and day better braking with the pads still plenty good after 60k miles. Before i'd have warped rotors, and worn out pads in 20k miles.

When my wife's '18 went in for the fuel pump recall, the dealer called to say it needed new front brakes. After I regained consciousness from his quoted price of $365...:spending:, I told them "No thanks" and immediately went looking online for replacement parts. I found Power Stop, OE equivalent pads AND rotors for +/- $90. When I went to pick up the truck, the dealer's inspection paperwork showed the front pads still had 5mm of material.....:annoyed:. Does anyone still wonder why dealerships have such bad reputations?

why were they inspecting the brakes when you went in for a fuel pump recall?..seems fishy to me

The truck was right at 29K miles, at the time, so I had them do the 30K service since it was in the shop anyway. Overall Inspection is part of their typical service.

Im thinking of researching the Lexus 460 big brake kit originally for the 2nd gen for future use. I did the upgrade on my 09 and the performance was night and day. I imagine it would be the same for the 3rd gen

My 07 has 213,000 miles on it. The front pads have been replaced 3-4 times and the rotors turned twice. I'll need new rotors the next time. If your mechanic knows what he is doing the rotors can be turned and get a lot of life out of them. My rear brakes have only been done once. Drums were not turned, just new pads.

If someone is going through pads and rotors in 20K-30K they are doing something wrong. I got 83,000 miles out of the front brakes on my F150. Use the transmission to gear down in mountains.

    See this thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/brake-upgrade-stoptech-rotors-trd-performance-pads.523829/

The TRD pads in there do fit 3rd Gen, but you not need high performance pads to solve rotor warping. However, the StopTech rotors in there have improved cooling over stock, which is unique to those rotors. Nearly all aftermarket rotors have the same internal cooling design as stock with just fancy coatings or drilling/slotting which doesn't help cooling performance, meaning they will be just as likely to warp if not moreso than stock. In short, I'd recommend the StopTech rotors if you want a design that is less likely to have warping issues. Or course you can just have your stock rotors turned as well, though removing material increases the likelihood of warping in the future.

You can get the rotors turned for 20 bucks each or you can buy new OEM ones for 45 bucks each.

I have to chuckle at people complaining about prices to do repairs. Granted dealerships are higher than private shops and some dealerships are plum full of idiots,, but let's see here:

    Cost of parts.

Paying a tech to do it which means paying them enough to buy tools and make a decent living. Considering any decent tech has forgotten more than 90% of people that post on a forum, that knowledge and experience costs money.

    Cost of shop equipment.

Cost of utilities and the shop to work in.

$365 for a brake job these days isn't bad. Price reflects where a person lives. But tools, experience, shop, FOOD, GAS ETC isn't free. And the decent techs on up can do more and do it right while stumbling drunk than 99% of people who post on forums will learn or do in their lifetime.

If I find a decent tech that knows what they are doing, pays attention to details, goes above and beyond to make sure it's a good repair rather than a band-aid fix, I actually would give them a tip after the job is done. Now where do I find this tech?:spending:

I’ve never had much luck with having rotors turned, and honestly with the cost of labor you might just be better off buying brand new rotors.

To be fair the last set I had machined was on my E39 and I’m not sure if they had been turned before since I was the second owner. The steering vibration while braking went away for a week or two and then came back and was even worse.
