I swear I saw a Chevy sonic blow up in front of me of the road yesterday. Accelerated out of a stop light turn and I just saw a huge puff of smoke. I was turning so I couldn’t watch what happened after. Idk if he hit something or what happened.

 

Also probably a good thing I’m swapping this seal now. I found more of my imploded needle bearing

 

I hear that and it's a tough mentality to face...


I've been thinking a lot about what it means to "be a man" in line with expectations like that... Admitting you need help to do something difficult and leveraging other people's help to do so is arguably manlier than struggling through it alone



just take up day trading so you can go to school and make bank

yeah I grew up in the same kind of house. Mom didn't work at all until we were out of high school, and that was because she knew they were going to split eventually. Dad was the breadwinner growing up.

It's a different mentality these days though that's for sure. I don't think it's wrong at all, in fact I think it's awesome in a lot of ways.

I do believe if you are with someone that supports you in pursuing a career of your choice, even if it involves taking some time off to get there, and you two are able to make that work - that's an incredible opportunity. I understand the nagging feeling of not being the one making the money during the time though. TBH I kind of struggle with that happening when we eventually move as I'll be the one needing to change up jobs/careers.

My counter-argument was I would be working as I attempt to pursue any kind of schooling/etc. and she questioned "why"

I went on to explain like I did above, but maybe I just don't understand the cost of living here to accept that part of it.

Then as I mentioned to her, the aspect of giving up the reigns (for a lack of better term). She insists it would be the perfect opportunity to do something for myself if it'll benefit me as I shouldn't "chase the money" but instead really do something I'd enjoy.

The idea just seems too good to be true though at the same time....then again she worked and did what she enjoyed doing and retired from it.

I've got months to think about it, but oddly enough it's come up a few times now. Even with the job offers I've received out here (can't take them, house not done yet), her and her family insist I pursue what I want to do...

For my own sanity, and comfort, work right away.

For my mental health, what they suggest...find schooling and pursue a different path.

It's hard doing something more for myself though as the biggest decisions in my life have always revolved around what's best for the other person;

2 examples are - my ex, her dad and her living in my old house. Other example being having moved my entire life to Chicago, IL when I was with my ex wife.

 

With that kind of support, and some time to think about it, it might be worth doing some school and training program shopping (school tours in particular). Knowing more about what you're getting into, how long it'll take, and what the costs (and potential wages) might make that decision easier.

I wouldn't worry about not being the bread bringer homer, thats an old idea that needs to die anyway. I've got a couple of friends back home who were told when they accidentally had their first kid as teenagers that they would never go to college and were stuck for good. They got better advice from somewhere else - she learned CAD and got a job designing oil rigs while he went to school. Now he's got a degree and she's moved up in the company and they're both making good money. In the long run, him not having to worry about that stuff worked out way better for both of them in the long run. Or in other words, she may see this as an opportunity for both of you, don't let old school notions of pride kneecap that.

That is what makes the whole idea just hard to accept.

 

Interesting job though, may not pay the best but it'd good good on my Resume

one of my best friends did something similar. After HS he went into the trades and ended up starting his own painting business. he did well enough through the years to put his wife through school. now she works full time in the medical field and he's in school and on the up and up with a defense contractor internship
