Do you mean the Remington Model 700 PCR or the Ruger Precision Rifle (RPR)?

Buy him a shoulder replacement while you're shopping, or at the very least a really good recoil pad. He'll get tired of being kicked by a mule after a while, he should have gone for the 6.5 Creedmoor. Just as accurate (or more so), effective range as long as anybody needs, not nearly as punishing to shoot, and he won't shoot the barrel out of it half as soon.

I had a .300 Win Mag once, probably the only rifle I ever owned that I don't miss. 4-5 rounds through it at the range and I was ready to quit.

I just don't understand the insistence that it has to be a .300WinMag. Having owned one, I know what it is like to shoot one, and they HURT. I am assuming, since he's buying a rifle designed for long-range shooting, that he'll be putting multiple rounds downrange whenever he goes to the range, in order to 1-zero his sights, and 2- improve his skills. He can do both more painlessly with something a little less robust, without giving up effective range and do it more comfortably. .300 WinMag ammo is also more expensive, whether you buy factory stuff or reload your own.

To each his own, though, and the RPR is a NICE rifle, would probably be my next long gun purchase if I were inclined to get another long-range rifle. I'll stick with my M1A (.308) and my 6.5 Grendel AR, both of which are good to about 1200 yards, which is plenty far for me.

It is what he wanted. Everyone has a personal preference with guns, bows, fishing rods, etc.

Cheapest I have found match grade ammo for him is about $2.75/round........NOT for me!!!!

Recoil sensitivity is subjective. I don’t have .300 win mag anymore because when I burned that last barrel I sold all my dies and and worked with LRI to rebarrel the receiver to a .300 PRC.

But it was not uncommon to shoot 40 rounds in a session. Especially when getting fresh dope on a new load. I’ve never had a sore shoulder, and I’ve never scoped myself. Largely in part to my proficiency in managing my recoil property, combined with not having a soft body. I’ve burned out quite a few long action barrels over the decades.

Lastly, a 6.5 creedmoor is not a apples to apples comparison or even on the same playing field as a large magnum. Heavy for caliber is around a 140 gr bullet using a 6.5/264 bullet going 2650 fps. Heavy for caliber in a .308/.300 mags is 220 gr doing 2800 with a full burn. When terminal performance meet external ballistics matter, this is where you want to be. This is why you don’t see people hunting grizzly’s with a 6.5 creedmoor typically.

Well, if you're going to hunt heavy game, then by all means use a heavy caliber. For hunting purposes, a RPR wouldn't be my choice of rifle, though; typically made for bench or prone shooting, too unwieldy for offhand. You did mention another reason not to go with the .300WM, though: barrel life. Guns with MV's >3K fps typically lose accuracy faster with high-volume shooting, due to barrel erosion.

Would be nice to know the reason for insistence on the .300WM over other calibers available in the RPR platform. I know what my personal preferences are for different purposes, and the reasons for them, but not the OP's.

Didn't most of us shoot bigger guns when we were younger? Kinda like wild women? If you didn't, what's wrong with ya?

I now appreciate small cases, small calibers, and little recoil or muzzle blast. At my age, the 6mm Creedmoor or fast twist .243 interest me in the RPR more than the other calibers.

His son wants a 300WM. Would be disappointing if he didn't at some point. The fact he wants it is reason enough.

My son BOUGHT the 300 win mag.....now looking for a scope - the ones he is interested in cost more than the gun! Now, that boggles my 'old man' mind!

It is HIS choice and HIS money to spend.

Supposedly he is up for a promotion at his job in another week or so (if they don't keep stringing him along) which will basically be doing 2 peoples jobs - which he is currently doing for his pay only. Told him to ask for double his pay to start as the person he would be replacing made more than he currently does. We will see. Told him to look elsewhere at other jobs to use as leverage in negotiating.

Good rule of thumb is to spend at least as much on your glass as you do on the gun, I'd say your son is doing it right. Good luck to him on the salary bump!

As I mentioned......I am OLD. A good quality scope was typically less than the quality gun you were buying it for.

Thanks for the info though, Guac.

Picked up a case (10 boxes of 20 rounds) of Federal Premium Gold Medal match grade ammo for $435 shipped to me......a little over $2.18/round. Best price I could find on match grade ammo. Now he wants some inexpensive rounds to use for sighting in his scope - which he hasn't gotten yet. Leaning towards a Nightforce brand.

    image (3).jpg Son got his scope the other day....a Nightforce NX8 F1 4-32 x 50mm with a MOAR reticle.

Now he just needs to bore sight it in and hit the range.
