Brake Upgrade: StopTech Rotors + TRD Performance Pads

There is a BBK section I added at the end of the thread, I upgraded my Tacoma to StopTech BBK covered in here.

Edit: I see the link in the quote. You upgrading wheel size too? I don’t think 350mm will fit 17s.

 

It's possible I may need spacers. I did mention my wheels to the Rep, but he didn't say anything.

It depends some on caliper design and clearance, StopTech lists 340mm as the largest available BBK under a 17” wheel, with their 355 BBK requiring an 18” wheel. Wheel spacers are not a great solution if the brakes don’t fit. I’d either consider getting brakes that do fit, or a larger wheel to get them to fit.

I think my Gladiator brakes are the largest I’ve seen fit in a 17” wheel at 345.5mm, but I also suspect that since those are OEM, the OEM wheels are designed to account for the needed clearance.

 

Understood. I appreciate your feedback on these brakes. I have a few inquiries to see if they will fit. It's hard to tell wheel size, but there are some Tacoma's on FB with them and . Can you tell what size wheels they have?

(BTW, attached are the specs. I'll check the other box to see if they have instructions)

If you can read the tire sidewall size in the photos it would give you your answer. In those FB photos (the both go to the same one) I cannot tell. I'd speculate 350mm will not fit 17s.

 

I'm hoping to have @Dcsleeper408 install them.

Here's a photo from the Powerbrake FP page showing a Ranger with my same size tire, 285/70/R17's, on what look like stock wheels (not sure if there's a spacer though). Strange enough, my 17" wheels were on a Ford Ranger at SEMA before I purchased them. (I understand I'm splitting hairs and comparing apples to oranges )

 

If they can build it, We can make it rub.

 

Attached is the Powerbrake X-1 template if anyone wants to check fitment. Note: the "stock wheel register" part goes into the hub void in the wheel. Print actual size on landscape. Paste onto cardboard (or print on card stock) and cutout. I'll report back with my findings on Venomrex 17's.

our brake kits fit under most 17 wheels incl the OE which are often the most difficult.

But of course, now I want these EvoDakarSuperZero wheels.

Any of those Evocorse wheels would look sweet on my Taco or EVOx

 

Looking forward to the install results. If you can fit 350mm rotors with directional cooling in a 17" wheel, that would potentially be the highest performance setup available without going to 18s.

Here's the official word from Powerbrakes:
...the Venomrex 17” wheels, I would say we have more than sufficient clearance for the Powerbrake S1 kit.

Unfortunately, my brake install might be delayed due to the instillation of the Dirt King Upper Arm Double Shear Gussets @su.brat

i just completed install of a Wilwood BBK with 13" rotors yesterday. no fitment issues. i wish you luck that a little grinding and you're gtg.

 

Are you going to upgrade the master cylinder or anything with the Powerbrake kit? This is going on your 3rd gen?

I am bias towards Brembo pads and discs. They offer excellent aftermarket brakes. The performance and longevity is outstanding. There now competively priced compared to Akebono, advics, and other brake manufacturers. I can't be the only one that has Brembo's on my vehicles right?

 

Yes, 3rd gen 19 DCLBOR. Off Road model and Pro come with the "electric hydraulic pump with an pressure accumulator" (brake booster for the crawl control), so I should be good to go. But, seeing this kit is fairly new for the Taco, I'll check with the distributor on this, and report back.


Also, Powerbrake supplied the stainless braided front lines with the kit, and I purchased rear lines from Wheelers. I'm going with Motul 5.1 fluid.
