I have a 2006 Prerunner, and I would like to improve my traction. I spoke to a mechanic who suggested a "pocket locker." The term is new to me and a search of the forum didn't turn up any information. It seems to be a partial differential gear replacement. Does anyone know whether this is a good option?

Im going to assume he means a lunchbox locker like the powertrax no-slip or something similar. Never heard anyone use the term pocket locker though.

Pretty sure it's called a lunch box locker b/c you're just replacing the parts inside the carrier to make the locker and the carrier is considered the lunchbox.
But I like your theory better.

This. On a DD 2wd truck a tru trac will be much less of a pain than a lunchbox

I've think the tru trac is probably the best option in this category.

I appreciate the link, but Amazon says its "currently unavailalbe"

also I'm in Canada, so shipping / duties would suck.
I was excited for Summit having it due to me already having an account and how they account for shipping and duty fees so I know what my "out the door" price is.

no worries. If we're gonna be honest right now, I'm still closer to Mall Crawler, then Rock Crawler.
    I can wait a little bit :)

Strange, It still shows one in stock and it will let me buy it now. Not sure if being in Canada has something to do with though.

That's a solid reason to go limited slip, and Not go lunchbox locker.

BTDT, with Aussie Lockers in my XJ. They're bitchin cool, cheap, and work well. But if your truck is a pavement pounder primarily? A lunchbox is probably not what you want. Just my $0.02

They do have very "unique" driving quirks on pavement for sure. I had one in my 03 and when it would "pop" it'd scare the living shit outta ya. You'd swear to God you broke something. Also wear tires out.

The lock rite I had in my 4runner would only unload on left turns. It so so strange. And when it did it sounded like gun shots. I learned to push in the clutch after I got started and coasted through the turn to try to avoid it.

If you live in Canada which I assume means you see snow every year, I would NOT put a lunchbox locker on a daily driver.

Lunchbox lockers can get really squirrelly on slick roads and make your day go down the drain real fast. Lunchbox lockers engage when a certain amount of torque is applied, and if it engages on a slick surface like say, during a turn...not good.

Not to say you can't do it, I had one in the rear of my old truck and had to adjust my driving style a little. But I live where the roads are dry most of the year

Limited slip or selectable locker would by my suggestion. Selectable is the way to go for maximum offroad traction, but they are pricey
