The other thing I was thinking is that I would fab it in such a way as to eliminate rotational force when the steps are used because I'm not sure how to make a smooth round clamp on a smooth tube not rotate.

Edit: If you want to go back to cheap, maybe you could weld a tab to the inside quadrant of the sliders and then bolt a DIY assembly to that. No rotation and no expensive clamps.

not opposed to throwing a tack weld on the upper clamp if i went that route. itd prevent rotation if there was any and stay out of the way if unbolted

Has anyone had problems receiving products from Baker’s Gas? 3 weeks to get a tig torch, 4 weeks to get an argon regulator, and going on 3 weeks for some tig wire and two clamps. Their prices are good, but damn they are slow. They also send no emails giving you updates or tracking numbers....

Tig welded a set of blocks for my younger brother. First time tig welding something someone will actually use lol. Took a couple sides on the first block to figure it out but they didn't turn out too bad.

I think it’s cast steel. It welded okay and I didn’t see any cracks afterwards. They were also welded on the bottom to the 1/2” rod. Didn’t have any nickel rods either.

Finished welding my skid plate this weekend and now I need to paint. The Harbor Freight Buzz Box did pretty alright. Needed to move to a 20amp outlet, since 15 wasn't getting me to far but it worked out. I didn't fully weld the inside gussets or the inside of the side gussets, since I didn't think it needed it. But the outside was all fillet welded and ground smooth. All the scores where I bent it and the diff bumpout, I did weld solid.

New Welders tend to over weld things just because it is new .

Look at things not every joint needs to be completely welded unless it is a sealing weld or critical structural weld.

Something you pick up after some time.

Yep. I did the same. It also gives you time think about the forces the part will actually experience. You think " that long weld was not really needed". "Next time I can get by with half as much welding".

The extra welding is never a waste, though. You get to work on your skills.

Unless of course all the extra welding causes one to run out of shielding gas and wire the start of a long weekend.

Not every one has extra wire and gas on hand because that lesson has not been learned yet .
