No personal experience but their gen 2's are good to go if you don't want to pay the HK tax.

oh! and HOLY SHIT the slide release is nearly impossible to operate; am hoping that loosens up, but my thumb is already torn up just with disassembly and fucking around with it.

Thats what Ive heard. Even saw some reviews using the Zenith guns (which is what i own). So I picked up a couple of them. Only tried one of them but it has been nothing but problems. Same ammo (my reloads) and the factory MKE magazine and runs flawlessly. Tried one of the KCI mags and getting failure to go into battery issues on rounds 1-3 (not always first round, but somewhere in the first three). Then every ~5 rounds or so it'll like fail to eject and cause a jam. Sometimes the round still chambers but the spent casing doesnt eject, sometimes its just a traffic jam on empty case and new round.

So not the best experience so far! Ill probably try one more of them that I bought and see if its just a one off or if my gun just really doesnt like them.

Pick up a Glock 44 - .22LR. Good practice gun, same controls, similar feel.

Am going to take this pistol to a gunsmith today. That slide lock/release has worn a hole in my thumb. Unreal kinds of tight. Did you have any issues with your 44?

Get them to do the "twenty-five cent trigger job" while there.

Good way to smooth up the trigger while keeping it stock.

Not as of yet (not expecting any.)

We found this gun likes CCI Standard Velocity ammo best.

I've heard they don't like 36 grain bullets, but have not verified that myself.

My 44 slide release was a little tight out of the box. However, rather than mess with it, I took the opportunity to train slide discipline in terms of reloads/casualty drills with my sons and wife. This way, they are not trying to one hand the slide.

"...one hand the slide"? I mean - other than that phrase describing my sex life as a single man nearing 50 years old, can you explain a bit more?

As slide releases break in, we often tend to get lazy and release the slide with the grip hand during a reload. If you have ever taken any handgun courses, most instructors frown upon that practice and force the students to manipulate the slide with the offhand. I admit, that I am just as guilty as most, and I will shortcut the process if not paying attention. However, I try to teach to the standard they will face in classes outside of my instruction.

Ahh! Trackin'. So the support hand moves up to trigger (bad choice of words) the slide release. On this new pistol that is or feels nearly impossible. Will get it to a gunsmith tomorrow.

Support hand moves to the slide (never touching the slide release) and racks the slide. If there is a round in the magazine, the slide will drop, chambering the round. The objective is to reduce fine motor movements, replacing them with gross motor movements, thus reducing the chance of issues during high stress.

This procedure is often called "slingshotting" the slide.

Having an ambi slide release is one of the main reasons I got the Glock 45.

My pistol does not seem to be able to do that. With a loaded mag, I tug on the slide from behind and nothing. No movement. Not even a wiggle. Without a magazine inserted a light tug backwards releases the slide to the closed position. Maybe my pistol is jacked up?

You're pulling straight back? The slide won't move very much - just enough to take pressure off the slide lock/release to let it drop. Then let go of the slide (do not ride it into battery).

Try this: pistol in strong hand, facing to the side. Support hand grabs top of slide. Push your hands together. That is an easier way to get leverage against the return spring.

yeah - I tugged a lot on it. There was NO movement. I couldn't get it to go back past the slide stop. I'll futz with it again when I get home. Thank you Scott.
