I'm looking at putting some valuables covered by a camper shell for a long trip. I haven't gotten a shell yet. What is the best type of camper shell to prevent someone breaking into it while it sits outside at a hotel? It seems the ones with windows could be easily broken into and opened. Ideally it would be nice to have windows but there are times when I need to transport things that need to be secured. Any suggestions or experiences here? Special types of locks? Thanks!

I would think one of the hardsided campers with doors that fold open into windows would fit the bill best, assuming you are using it for camping purposes as well as storage.

Maybe a GFC camper or something similar? RSI Smart Cap?

If they can't see in they tend not to try to break in.

I've had shells on my trucks for the past 15 years and have never been broken into. When we do park at a hotel overnight we do bring anything that we don't want stolen inside (i.e. valuables, firearms, etc.). Only leave in the shell what you could bear being stolen.

I have a leer shell and the rear hatch is stupid easy to break into. Ask me how I know. Probably similar for other brands. As suggested, you are better off covering all the windows and not leaving anything of value in the shell.

Same with my leer shell. I have a moving blanket that I drape over anything in the inside so it isn't as noticeable, but as others have said OP, don't leave anything of value in the inside unattended. If someone really wants to break in they will no matter how "secure" it is.

I had my SnugTop XTR broken into a few years ago ( total bitch to get the side window replaced ) and they left my tool bag , portable compressor but stole a duffle bag full of the kids and my snow clothes .... Well what I did after the canopy was repaired was just velcro black felt over the side windows on the inside and with that you can barely see anything through the back window

As many as I can fabricate
I added some locks to mine but I take everything of value out. There is nothing short of armor to keep someone out. If they want it, it will be gone.

Camper shells, by their nature, are not very secure. The weak spot is the rear door. I suppose the kind with a locking handle on each side is a little more secure than one with a single locking handle in the middle. But I would still keep anything valuable locked in the cab.

I just broke into my house with a laminated truegreen card left in my mailbox a few nites ago. I wouldnt trust anything to be safe under a camper shell.

Thanks everyone for the valuable input. Probably will just understand it's going to be insecure. Not sure if I'm ready for the heavy duty design that 747reyesJ has. Much appreciated!
