Have you guys done this trail?

I am looking into doing it this summer and was wondering if anyone has done it recently. I found some old threads that don' provide much info.

Also looking for a buddy that wants to do it as well so we make it a trip.

    Thoughts?

I have the file that Leon put together and had for sale, now it’s “donations appreciated” . I think that’s on advrider?

Anyway, I haven’t done the trail. Got thinking about it after the ok4wd video of them doing it last year. Might do it in sections on my dual sport.

the video if you haven’t seen it - https://youtu.be/zcW2qlr7a-w

I saw the video today and it seems like a nice trip that could be done without big mods. I was also thinking about doing it in sections. grab 2 days to one half and on another weekend do the second half.

I just need a buddy now to program the whole thing since stranding in the wilderness in a single vehicle is risky. Not sure if someone has done it alone. Still two vehicles seem more fun as well.

Done some sections around collier mills. Fun time. Just moved north to NY or I would be down to plan a trip.

Iv done the entire trail from start to end. It’s a lot more road miles than I would like. But it’s nice. You go through a lot of farm land. I did the first 1/3 in a lifted new body style jeep cherokee trailhawk. 2.5” lift with 31” tires. I did the remaining 2/3 in a stock 3rd gen trd offroad. The only section where you’ll need even 4 wheel drive is parts of the pine barrens. Depending on your skill level, there’s only one spot that gets sketchy. It’s a dirt road that connected two paved roads. Its pretty short but heavily washed out.

All in all, it’s a stock rig friendly trail. I would likely do it again with a group

edit: just reread your original post. I did it solo, three different days.

You think this trail could be done in a stock Subaru crosstrek?

if your careful. The mud holes in the pine barrens are deceivingly deep but there are bypasses for almost everyone. The tnjt is mostly dirt roads

Thanks I taken something like two trips a year to Cape May for years and have wanted to spend some time in the Pine Barrens. I have my truck but the subaru just drives more comfortable on road trips and forest roads. For forest roads not requiring 4×4 I'd pick the subaru over my truck or my friends 4runner.

Iv seen subarus do things that I could not believe. They’re much more capable than people give them credit for

This is a pretty good thread if anyone is thinking of doing it at overland bound .com. They have the most up-to-date GPX file in the first post. You'll need to join to download it though. I'm planning a trip probably late summer/early fall.

I'd definitely be interested in running this if anyone else wants to make a weekend out of it.

I did it once before in three different weekends. I’d be down to running it in one weekend

For those who've done the trail, are there any spots along the trail for primitive camping throughout the trip?

I'm down. I'm a Piney so let me know which end you're starting on. I'd definitely come out for a weekend when you're in my area of the sticks. Camping might be rough because I know for a fact that the sites at Bass River, Batona, Atsion, and most of Wharton booked up IMMEDIATELY as soon as they opened this April. And the forest rangers down here don't take too kindly to unapproved dispersed camping.
Most of the primitive sites require a hike or canoe in, no way you could get a truck back to them.

    Shoot me a PM

not legally. All camping in nj has to be in campgrounds. You could deffinately find a nice spot though

What a weird law lmao. I wonder if it was created out of anti-homelessness over conservation. Thanks for the pro tip!

New York is the same way. It’s their way to control the people! Just kidding. I’m not sure where it comes from. New Hampshire you can disperse camp. Vermont you can disperse camp. I’m sure pa is the same.

i just camped a couple weekends ago off the Delaware River in nj. And had no issues.

I’ve had the GPX file for this route for such a long time and have never done it.

Definitely going to try and get it done this Fall.
