I ranthe power cable underneath the headliner and down the a-pillar and plug it into a 12 volt power supply. I suppose I could take a lead from the mirror but I'd rather do it my way and not have anything hardwired cuz I'm going to sell the truck to Carvana and get a new one soon
The camera has been operating great now for over a year..

Thats the beauty with the Cobra, you can get a hardwire kit for the cam, no need to monkey around with 12v plugs and sockets.

Tons of helpful information! Thank you all!
Already planned on the mirror power adapter. Now just deciding which cam.

    Edit:

2019 didn't have factory gopro mount, so no. The location of the factory gopro mount isnt a great place to wire this dash cam anyway lol

Yep, 2019 + did not have the GoPro mount. I believe it was to the right in the upper middle of the passenger side of the windshield. So not the best spot for a dash cam, you want that closer to the center so the cam can capture lanes on both sides of the vehicle more evenly. Mine is on the driver's side close to the rearview mirror, the best locations is close to the rearview mirror on either side.

GoPro location is fine to capture a trip video for entertainment uses.

I'm looking for motion sensing while parked...we have a rash of breaking at places where I park to mountain bike. Would want trar camera as well for same reason. Any thoughts?

Also...some reviews talk about interference with XM stations...anybody see that?

Saw some brands that have motion sensing when the vehicle is off but require a little extra wiring to the battery. Want to say one of the nicer garmin or aukey brands had that

My factory GoPro mount is just to the passengers side of the radar sensor and with the wide viewing angle of most of these cams, I don't think you'd be missing much action by putting it there.

I guess it depends on the camera you end up with.

If you want to do gopro mount, many of the cheap Chinese action cameras are set up for dash cam use. Come on with power, just rewrite the card when full and so on. Just have to look at which one. Been a long while since I dug around. I'll be digging soon because I'm tired of the crap suction cup mount that came with my Rove 1 dash cam. Cam works great, but haven't found a way to use one of my large pile of gopro mounts lol.

Lots of great tips in this thread, thanks to all. I have a question for everyone but especially those living in the southwest: has anyone had issues with heat? We’re in AZ and my wife bought me a GoPro Hero 7 black a couple years ago and the damned thing has never lasted more than 15 minutes outside the garage without overheating and shutting down - with the one exception of the day we went to play in the snow - so I’ve always thought a dedicated dash cam would do the same. We may have just gotten a dud GoPro, but the waste of so much money has kept me from trying dedicated dash cams although I’ve been interested for a while. Has anyone had any issue with this?

I know I'm not SW but Florida gets its fair share of heat. I haven't had a problem with a dedicated dash cam.

My GoPros are a different story. I use them when I'm kayak fishing and definitely have had heat issues especially if in a case. I think there is a definite operating temperature range on the GoPro where it's not happy in the heat especially if you are feeding it constant power vs battery.

Was looking at the Aukey model but it looks like Amazon removed Aukey products from their site because of fake reviews.

I strongly advise to get a dash cam that has a capacitor instead of a battery. The summer heat kills the battery.

Used Rexing; changed to Nexar. I like the cloud based uploading and not having to pull a card or anything. I'm sure there are other brands that offer something similar and are better but the free cloud and price made it pretty nice.

    Here's another option...
I bought two of these, one each for my wife's vehicle and my truck.
Hard to beat for the money. They work great (very good video) and have a lot of features some of which I don't even use.
Easy to install and holding up fine so far after more than a year in the Ga heat.

question for anyone with the Viofo A129 setup. I've had this in my truck for several months, using their memory card and the ODB connector that also allows to monitor in parking mode.

Seems to work fine and overall happy with the device... until recently. After a few months, I noticed that the device wasn't actually on... and the red light was flashing. Manual says this indicates a firmware upgrade - which i did not (at the time) invoke. Rebooting the device will fix it for a short time.

I hooked up to a PC and did a new FW upgrade. Also contacted support at the same time. They also told me to do the FW upgrade, as well as reformat the SD card again (Fat32).

Still have flashing red light maybe every 10th startup. Anyone seen similar issues?
